Four army troopers narrowly escape death and injury

YALA: Four special force army troopers escaped death and injury when a pickup truck in which they were travelling to join a Children’s Day celebration at a school in Yala’s Bannang Sata district narrowly missed a bomb explosion Friday.

Police said that a 15-kg homemade bomb which was planted in the middle of the Bannang Sata-Krong Penang road between Ban Kalang and Ban Thamnob which is under repairs was accidentally detonated after the truck passed through the site.

Shrapnels from the bomb damaged the truck but all the four special force troopers were intact. Remains of a radio and circuit board were found among the bomb shrapnels scattered on the road and surrounding areas.

Police suspected that Ahmad Loembaesa’s gang was responsible for planting the bomb to kill or maim members of the security force. Two suspected members of the gang were earlier arrested by officials.
