I was just wondering if anyone out there has had similar symptoms. When I go to bed I feel fine, however during the middle of the night I awake with cheast pains, the only way to alleviate the pain is to get up for an hour, then it seems to subside. I looked on the internet and found that it could be angina. So went to the hospital in Sattahip and they blood pressure tests and a ecg test, saw the doctor and she gave me a course of pills for duodenal/gastric ulcer (all this for 600baht) the pills have eased the pain a little but is still bad enough for me to have to get out of bed to ease the pain. All the tests where normalish, as I have an heart murmer, which I knew about anyway. Incidentally I have to go back to the hospital on the 28th for an ultra sound test. Anybody else shared similar symptoms?

If the pain stops when you get out of bed...it likely is not your heart...but doc is probably correct...an ulcer....but what that means is you likely should go back and get some GI tests.....to see if there really is an ulcer and what the extent of the damage might be. Ain't gonna go away on its own

Thanks for the reply, as I said I have to back on the 28th of this month, If ok with the heart will ask for the GI test.

An ECG (EKG) will show any current problems at the time but they will need to do another to compare now that they have a baseline. When they compare side by side they can tell if you heart has suffered any compromise between the 2 readings.

Have you ever had heartburn or acid reflux ? Do you eat a lot late and then sleep soon afterward ? Do you drink lots of coffee ? All will contribute to pain as you described.

No don't suffer with heartburn or acid, don't eat late, one coffee a day, but could eat and drink much healthier. Bacon and egg butty for breakfast every morning. The older I get the less I seem to drink but maybe the damage was done maybe eons ago?

Until you can get to the doctor, If its acid reflux, try a couple of books under your bed's headboard so your feet will be lower than your head and its less likely that stomach acid will bubble up into your esophagus while sleeping.

Possible...the good news is that current thinking shows that many ulcers are actually caused by bacteria and can be healed with antibiotics...so maybe your is the easy case. I wish you well...let us know what the outcome is !

Not suggesting this is your problem but worth keeping in mind. My brother in law had similar symptoms and it turned out he had a Hiatel Hernia. He did have other symptoms that you don't seem to have though. For instance, holding food down became really difficult.

I had the same and thought it was heart problem. But always in the middle of the night. three times i had to go to A&E the pain was so bad. I was given morphine which eased it . After having the camera probe i was put on antyacid tablets one a day one hour before food. The tablets i take are provacid and when i asked how long i should take them the doc said permanently. i have had no problems for two years . pete

Thanks for the reply. The pain can be horrendous, its like somebody standing on my chest. What did they diagnose with you Pete, was it an ulcer? The doctor has given me 4 different pills, the main ones being omeprazole 20 mg(miracid), domperidone and simetone, the 4th being like a minty drink. They seem to be easing it a little, which makes it a slightly more bearable.

Same here the docs said I had gastritis. Antacids knock it dead.

Go to the pharmacy and buy some Ranitidine tables (generic name) (150mg) take two a day, one at breakfast and one at dinner. If the pain goes away then you know it was gastric acid causing the problem. You don't even need a prescription for them and they should cost about 15-20b for 10.

If the pain is like i had the only way to ease the pain is to prevent the cause (acid) traveling up to the chest when laying down.i used to get the same pain when i bent over like when washing the car . The camera test showed scaring from ulcers but the problem was acid traveling up to my chest. see the doc get the tablets

and the pain stops. I buy mine now in thailand over the counter and i buy 10 packs as you get cheaper. pete. ps Gaviston is good but it wont help with this,,

Where does the acid come from Pete, does it come from an ulcer? Can the ulcer be repaired? Thx

An Ulcer is a hole in the lining of your stomach. It can be caused by acid eating away at your stomach lining or by bacteria. If the latter, it can be easily stopped by killing the bacteria and allowing it to heal. if the former, you can inhibit the production of stomach acid and again allow it to heal. But limiting stomach acid can have drawbacks such as poor nutrition because now your food does not get digested properly. No easy solutions....easy to get relief but not easy to solve the real problem as to why it happened in the first place.

Thanks for the information, only time will tell by the look of it.

I had a similar problem. It was some type of acid reflux/heartburn from diet and eating a bit too late at night before bed. However, please.....PLEASE.....never take any chances when you have any type of chest pain. Best to let a Dr. decide what the problem is. I just read an article about how around 50 percent of people who have heart attacks in the UK ignored prior warning signs (such as chest pain). So again, let a Dr. figure this one out for you.

Yeah thanks, I have to go back to the hospital on the 28th for further tests on my heart (ultra sound), then it looks like I will have to go down the gastric route.

Gall Stones do the same.
