Recommendations for a Farang-friendly lawyer

tropo

I would like to find a Farang-friendly lawyer. Preferably I would like to talk to a lawyer to discuss my options without paying a heavy consultation fee. What sort of money do lawyers charge here for a consultation?

Didn't you ask something similar the other day?

If you want a free consultation try the Tourist Court at the top of Pratumnak.

Otherwise I think it's safe to assume that all lawyers here will charge a lot and will do little.

The noisy farang ones in particular have probably all run away back home anyway.

(here we go again. Sigh!)

No, I have never asked this question before. I have never been in need of a lawyer before.

The tourist police (Thai staff at headquarters) recommended I find a lawyer LOL

Why did you come to the conclusion that there aren't any good lawyers in Pattaya? - have you tried them all? In order to think it's a "safe to assume", you must have a lot of experience.

I seem to remember you posting about some legal issue the other day, to do with verbal abuse? Maybe my memory is just bad.

I have had some experience with lawyers here thanks to my position on my condo committee. I was not impressed. I also follow the local news which leaves me even less impressed by local lawyers, particularly the farang ones. These are just my opinions. Do with them as you will. It makes no difference to me. Personally the further I am from any lawyer the happier I am.

As I mentioned (and which you ignored), as far as I know you should still be able to get a free consultation with a lawyer at the Tourist Court which is conveniently situated at the top of Thappraya Road. If that information doesn't answer your question then I don't know what will.

I have already been to the court house. My problem cannot be handled by the tourist court.

It maybe useful to provide some information here about this court though as its existence is probably not widely known.

Magna Carta on South Road is probably as good as it gets in Pattaya. Not cheap though. For an initial chat it is unlikely they will charge at all. However, you cannot expect detailed legal advice at this stage.

Don't talk with the farang greeter in there. He's nothing but a former bar pimp. The actual Thai lawyer does get some good recommendations, but not this pimp. Once a pimp, always a pimp.

Is your matter civil or criminal?

Are there any difference of familiarity to your 'home' country's law that could affect how the lawyer explain things to you?

Like lawyer that can compare things to UK law is going to be more use to British people and vice versa for American

Otherwise, a good Thai lawyer with good command of English should be enough

The farang ones that seem to have a lot of presence though...can they even practice law legally even? look at how one we should mention turns out....

Whoever I choose will be a thai Lawyer. Any Farangs involved with law firms are merely consultants, not lawyers. Of course, a good Farang consultant would be very useful.

It's a minefield here though, because foreigners are seen by law firms as a very good source of income and we're easy prey. If a law firm screws you over, who you gonna call?

That's like saying can anyone recommend a farang friendly taxi driver ....... tongue.png kinda depends on ya wallet .... then they are friendly !!

Maybe, but it doesn't cost nearly as much to keep a taxi driver friendly.biggrin.png

If i was ever in any need of a Lawyer here then i would be looking in the direction of Bangkok. The legal profession in Pattaya from top to bottom is full of bent unqualified people who will sell you out to the other side if the price is right.

I understand your sentiments, but it's just too inconvenient.

I have used Magna Carta for two items and was happy both times. They have expats and English speaking Thai's. Both of my matters were civil (land transfer and notary) rather than criminal. Not cheap though. For reference I will probably go back to them for a new will based on previous experiences.

Cheers

My property law lawyer charges 1,000 THB for an initial consultation, speaks reasonable English and is located near the intersection of 3rd and Klang in Pattaya, he only started charging the 1,000 THB because he had so many farang "time wasters" who wanted questions answered for free

PM me for details

I also use Magna Carta. I have done so for 13 years now, which is actually just before they became Magna Carta.

I initially used them to set up the Thai company to buy the house, get my UK driving licenses converted, setting up a pre-nuptial agreement, writing my Thai Will, certifying documents for use in the UK.

I have my annual accounts prepared there.

I used them a lot for advice before I discovered Thai Visa!

Most (all?) off the advice was free and I was only charged when I asked them to actually do something. Mind you, the advice may have been free as I was using and paying for their services in other areas.

They are not particularly cheap, nor are they all that expensive. For example the annual accounts cost 15000 baht, whereas I know I could get it done for 12000 baht elsewhere.

However, I know they will do the accounts properly.

I have no idea who the 'farang bouncer' is mentioned by one poster above, when I go to their office, I go to the reception that has 1 or 2 Thai girls sitting there, who ask me if I want tea or coffee or water whilst I wait.

They then escort me to the accountant.

If whatever issue it is you are dealing with is worth going the legal / lawyer route then its worth doing properly.

Many reputable Law firms will give you an initial consultation (usually an hour) free of charge.

As another poster has suggested you head to Bangkok for Reputable Law firms the best of which is Tilleke and Gibbons

  • 1 year later...

I'm on the hunt again for another lawyer. The one I used last year was no good and a waste of time and money. I used him for 2 court appearances. I can't say who he is, but I need someone a lot better.

Someone mentioned on another thread a firm called "Thai Euro Law" near Big C South. Does anyone have any experience with this firm?

Only for civil matters but I would consider them first for consultation on possible legal matters.

Try this firm.

I've been using them for many a year & the lady who runs it is well known amongst the higher echelons of local society.

unusual address but she set up there many years before the bars came along

Tel: 66-38-429343

Thanks for the heads up, but I require representation in court over a civil matter unrelated to real estate.

For Thai office I thought Noppachai were quite good.  Just off Pattaya Nua.  If you are coming from Sukhumvit,  it's the last left before 3rd Road.  Big office used by Thai & farang.  Seemed honest.  For farang I was impressed with Hans Lankari office near Tai & 3rd Road.
