French justice minister resigns over anti-terror plan

FRANCE -- France’s outspoken justice minister, Christiane Taubira, resigned on Wednesday (January 27), just as parliament prepared to examine a constitutional reform plan she openly criticized.

The left-wing minister had long been the bane of French conservatives. She spearheaded the law allowing gay marriage three years ago and many on the right accused her of being soft on crime.

But Taubira was often at odds with her own government’s policies.

She confirmed her resignation in a tweet, saying that resisting sometimes meant leaving to stand by your beliefs.

The news came just as parliament prepared to debate a controversial constitutional reform that would strip dual citizens of their French nationality if they are convicted of terrorism.

Taubira has openly disagreed with the plan, championed by the government in the wake of the November 13 Paris attacks. She called it discriminatory and useless in preventing the radicalization of French nationals.

President Francois Hollande’s office said Taubira would be replaced by Jean-Jacques Urvoas — a Socialist lawmaker widely seen as more supportive of the government’s line on security issues.

Good riddance then.

Could our German justice minister please follow suit? I want Horst Seehofer. Preferably as chancellor.

But actually does it matter when some Ahmed loses his French citizenship? As things stand, he just has to make it physically to any European state

including France and claim asylum because he's got a death sentence hanging over his head in the state of his other nationality, for all the right reasons.

Stripping dual nationals of their French citizenship sounds like a reasonable plan if you are convicted of terrorism.

She called it discriminatory and useless in preventing the radicalization of French nationals.

She is likely correct on this point.

Yes - it discriminated against terrorists.

The problem?

75 % of French are satisfied she leaves, because she loved criminals too much; for her, don't put them in jail, too bad for these poor fellows

I am sure many French want to vote Front National because she is " too soft on crime " ; a such person is too much on left side, we need people more " cruel ", left wing has no place in France
