NLA sets up committee to tackle nepotism

Thammarat Thadaphrom

BANGKOK, 6 February 2016 (NNT) – The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has given its approval to the idea to form a 19-member committee responsible for the study of measures to stamp out nepotism in Thailand.

The NLA’s main panel chaired by President Pornpetch Wichitcholchai voted 170-0 with 1 abstention, to endorse the establishment of a committee in charge of studying measures to remove nepotism from Thai society. The committee which is comprised of 19 members will have 120 days to complete its task.

The idea was proposed by NLA member Admiral Saksit Cherdboonmuang who claimed that the bureaucratic system is the one of the most important mechanisms in driving and developing the nation, apart from politics, the private sector, and the public.

According to him, not only do civil servants ignore regulations and the code of ethics, they also allow nepotism to exist among them, which paves the way for corruption practices to occur habitually.

Therefore, he said the effort to combat nepotism should be included in the reform roadmap for the sake of the country’s future.

Nepotism in Thailand is an entrenched culture and you don't need a committee to study it. This is just as good as avoiding the matter, going nowhere and soon will be forgotten. Has been useful though to use this on your political enemies. If there is a remote possibility of practicing meritocracy, start with nepotism at the top of the food chain aka the military.

No need for a committee, there is a national super expert on this subject just waiting in the wings along with his reformed nasty thug sons.

This is the super expert who wrote the nepotism manual.

Just ensure there's a free flow of ear medicine.

If we are having some sort of nepotism Olympics here then everyone is going to win gold.

Reds, yellows, army...they are all at it boys and just as bad as each other. Give it a rest.

Then of course we have political appointee nepotism.

Favored ruthless stirrers and fixers etc., who 99% of the time have no knowledge or experience or valuable insight but get appointed to powerful positions as a reward for their 'work'.

19-member committee

I bet 18 of them are family and friends of the head honcho...

We jest but I wouldn't be at all surprised if this was true!

Yeah we jest, but the irony is that there is a high probability that at least one will be a close (but worthy whistling.gif) relation of some senior official or politician.

And they will just fail to see the irony in being nepotistic in appointing a relation to an anti-nepotism committee.

They'll probably point out in justification that the person who selected the appointee is neither a relation of the appointee, or the appointees Father, General Somchai Soandso, the Minister of XXXXXXXX.

Thais aren't big on irony. It would be far too embarrassing if the irony in 98% of governmental decisions and communications was actually highlighted. Lose'em big face Kimosabe. blink.pngblink.pngblink.png

blatant hypocrisy, nepotism will never be eradicated here, not only Thai but all peoples want to help family get ahead,

what you know or WHO you know ,

ask history Chingiss Khan used his family to supress and rule a huge chunk of the planet

and his grandson was the ruler through nepotism, Kings married queens and visa versa ,what ever advantage you could get via marriage was acceptable, so what has really changed ethics? accountability ? or more scrutiny?

Ya think?

Uncle Too's crew has a differing view:

"Top officials in Thailand’s military government have defended using the state budget to employ relatives after it emerged that fifty-seven members of the junta’s legislature have hired family members as personal aides."

Contrary to the spokesman's belief, nepotism is not good for running the country for precisely the opposite reasons cited.

If it is common practice to hire relatives over other applicants, it is inevitable that time and again people who are not up the the job will be taken on......the effects of this are quite plain to see in so many aspects of Thai government and business where over and over, you encounter people who simply don't have the necessary ability or qualifications to do the job they have.

It is a leach on the back of the Thai nation

So we start with his brother then. gigglem.gif

As Chalerm once said about his son......it's not nepotism....he's very qualified................

Entrenched in every level of society.....everywhere!

To which of Chalerm's 2 thug sons are you referring? (Yes, I know, he has three)

Duangchalerm - Have gun will travel or Wanchalerm - Have a clean toilet.

May 2015 the NLA votes 145 to 5 votes with10 abstentions the Inheritance Tax bill. Total members 160.

February 2016 the NLA passed a teen pregnancy bill with 179 votes in favor and 6 abstentions. Total members 185.

Prayut's NLA membership can't maintain its own membership and it's concerned about nepotism in government?

Just wondering how nepotism might be rooted out in Thailand. Other than the obvious brothers, sons.etc, what to do? Do a database search of employees maybe? Entering Thai names would stop the search completely - Thai surnames are nearly indecipherable with complexity + variant spellings used within family. Given names? Well, everyone has a nickname.

Lotsa luck to this committee - which probably has no intention of discovering/eliminating 1 relative from the roles and little brother has nothing to worry about....

cheesy.gif this lot are going to stamp out nepotism...

Yeah, right... http://www.khaosodenglish.com/detail.php?newsid=1425377114&section=

This deserves a little more attention. From your source:

"A report published by investigative news site, Isra News, revealed that 57 lawmakers in the 220-member National Legislative Assembly (NLA) have hired their own spouses, siblings, children, and cousins as staff."

"Leading members of the military government, including Prime Minister and junta chairman Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha, defended the practice last week, insisting that it is not against the law."

The NLA has as much credibility in fighting nepotism as the military junta has in fighting corruption.
