February 10, 201610 yr Hello I like to use static IP instead of DHCP. It worked since Years without any issues. Just today morning, i wasn't able to to connect to the internet with my android device, even, WLAN is connected. I can connect a local IP, but not google.com or anything else on the web. I did restart my router and phone. Since the same issue still is present, i did a factory reset of the 3bb Huawai HG531 router and configured it from new. And still, static IP don't work. DHCP no problem. Why? What happen? Any ideas? That's strange.
February 11, 201610 yr How do you set up your static IP? I find it preferable for long-term reliability to set it at the router end rather than at the device end as that way the device thinks it's getting a random IP address via DHCP, which they usually like. It also avoids having to configure the gateway or DNS settings on the device (and it sounds like one of those device settings may be causing your problem: probably the DNS setting). Of course if you particularly want to configure specific DNS servers for specific devices (to use smart-DNS services, for example,) then you would want to do so at the device end. But you have to be prepared to keep the settings up to date manually.
February 12, 201610 yr Author It was set at the router directly. DNS i didn't set at the router. At the end-devices i used the google dns. I will try it again with the 3bb dns.
February 13, 201610 yr It is normally dependent on the ISP's package as to whether you have a static, or number of, static addresses. Most packages, especially the lower end ones, use dynamic IP, with the lease on the address lasting 96 hours (4 days) if continually running. Lease time may vary, but is normally around that spot. With dynamic, every time you shutdown your network link (connection to the internet), you will be assigned another IP address. There are services and software available that will maintain a dynamic IP address, but that is 3rd party and not from your ISP.
