Khunying Pornthip urges public to speak up against corruption and Sorayuth's court case

BANGKOK: -- Wellknown forensic expert Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunant called on members of the public not to just gossip about corruption scandals, including the one against news anchor Sorayuth Suthasnajinda, but to rise up to speak against them publicly.

The khunying who is also the spokesperson of the extraordinary committee of the National Reform Steering Assembly said Wednesday that members of the assembly have been lobbying for the assembly president to hold a debate on the issues of the reform of media ethical conduct and corruption in wake of Mr Sorayuth’s conviction by the Criminal Court.

She insisted that the proposed debate was not intended to put pressure on Sorayuth to resign because no one could pressure anyone to resign as the matter depend on each individual’s conscience.

She made clear that if she was invited by Sorayuth to join his programme as a guest she would turn it down “because the matter at issue now does not involve Sorayuth or Channel 3 but because the problem is that this is an issue of ethical crisis.”

As far as Sorayuth’s court case is concerned, Khunying Pornthip said the case is quite clear and there is no need for further evidences. Then she pointed out four proven facts about the case: there was the forgery of document; cheques were issued to the state agency in figures which were not rounded; MCOT has demanded payment of 138 million baht; NACC has faulted the suspected wrongdoers and, finally, the court has found them guilty.

This is presumably a different Khunying Pornthip from the one that enthusiastically promoted the piece of fraudulent crap known as the GT 200 - acquired at absurdly inflated prices (Bt 400,000 per unit) for her agency - The Forensic Science Institute.Actually these pieces of shit as subsequently verified in UK courts were worth nothing at all, essentially a scam. She has no right to pontificate about ethics.

The one and the same.

"Pornthip Rojanasunand, Director of the Central Institute of Forensic Science, also defended the use of the GT200 devices, claiming that they were effective when searching for bombs and even nails under water. She said: "I do not feel embarrassed if the bomb detector is proven ineffective. Personally, I have never handled the device myself. But my people have used it and it is accurate every time. Long long time ago, people believed that the Earth is flat and anyone who said otherwise faced execution. Things which are not visible does not necessarily mean they do not exist. The devices are there and no one has the right to ban their use. I will continue to use it.""

I don't care what she has been accused of in the past - she is a public person and if something is obviously wrong it is her duty to make this public

If you search around you will find that she and in fact many others in a number of other countries were taken in by the aforementioned gizmo's and its promoter.

She has spoken out about corruption and you do not seem to agree with her right to do so why might that be?

She is a Thai national you are not, she has every right to speak out and by doing so she has admitted to her earlier errors of judgement.

Can you will you do that?

Don't get your point. Are you saying that those closely associated with corruption can start preaching sanctimoniously about that crime without anybody pointing out the disgusting hypocrisy?

Regardless, she does have some following and if she can get more Thai / foreign folks to get serious about corruption then let her speak, why not?

Surely any voice against corruption is a step forward.

Can't take her seriously if she is selective with her call against corruption.

Rubbish, she's talking /commenting in regard to a specific current event.

Can be dangerous to speak the truth, in Thailand!

Agreed. It's all very well for Pornthip to urge the public to 'not gossip but openly speak out about corruption' [sic] but she's Teflon, a Hiso, albeit a good 'guy'. She should front the anti corruption a la Joanna Lumley with the Gurkhas, otherwise Mr and Mrs Somchai, without a figurehead, will be too cowed to act. Well? Ms Pornthip?

Interesting comment from the Justice Minister about state officials appearing on any of Sorrayuth's shows as he warned officials to use discretion.

He said they must decide on an individual consideration of ethics and morality and how they understand corruption issues.

It sounds important but really has left the door wide open, has avoided the issue and that of making the decision that state officials should not appear since it could send out wrong signals about support for Sorrayuth and tolerance / acceptance of what he did.

That's exactly what I said. Playing safe and on her terms to pick on that specific event. Is that the only current corruption event ?

In this country when you are not selective you are toast.

Still 3rd world.

None so blind as those that don't want to see.

With the Thai libel laws along with computer crimes even if you are telling the truth you

will be taken to court and your life will be made miserable. Even the strongest, and

richest seem to spend a lot of time and money in court defending themselves even when

the statements they make are true and accurate. coffee1.gif

A public poll of 3,250 people has been conducted by PeoplePoll Thailand with the question: "Has your trust in Sorayut gone down as a result of the court decision against him?"

Result:

Trust has fallen - 48.7%

Not fallen - 34.9%

Not sure/no comment - 16.4%

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the court proceedings........

Yes and Dr Pornthip is one old blind bat or one eye closed bat. Wink wink.

Sorayuth is guilty, period, but he handled the whole case wrong. He should have made up several lists of witnesses that absolutely have to be called, then taken a sympathy tour through Issan. Monkey see, monkey do.

No need for a sympathy tour. Just go on the PDRC stage and hug Uncle Suthep and he likely to get away with the harsh public sentiment like Sondhi. Monkey see monkey do.
