PHUKET: -- Police on the island are currently looking for a group of teenage street racers who are alleged to have crashed into a German tourist leaving him with minor injuries, smashed up his pickup truck and assaulted one of his friends in Rawai in the early hours of this morning (Mar 10).

Maj Thada Sodarat of Chalong Police was call to investigate an incident on Wichet Rd in Rawai just after midnight where it had been reported a 59-year-old German man had his pickup truck smashed up and one of his friends was assaulted by a group of teenage street racers.

Police arrived at the scene, a unknown resort on Wichet Rd, to find Mr Kiesl Stegfried, 59, and three of his friends, including two Thai women, waiting for an ambulance to arrive. Mr Stegfried had suffered scratches his right arm and leg and had bruises all over his body after being knocked down by one of the street racers.

I understand that street racing is against the law...but when did assault and intimidation become a crime in Thailand?

Unknown resort?

How did the BIB find them?

Not that that point matters, compared to the body of the story... But... Wicket road, in Rawai, is a street race most of the time, anyway.. What scare me is tour bus street racing!

These young Thai street racers have been doing this in that area for years. The Chalong police knows about them. They'd be easy to catch if the police really put some thought and effort into it by having some undercover officers roam the area during the usual race times, notify the collegues and catch them. Bring them one by one to the parents and give them a good lecture on first time offence. The second time, fine the parents 5000 THB and give the kids community service, cleaning the streets or beach.

What they are doing right now: drive one time around viset and saiyuan road in the night with their truck and flashing lights that you can see from kilometers away giving all crooks a nice heads-up.

But it wont happen. They are clearly not interested in solving issues like that.
