hi

I d like to have an atm card to use here in thailand

for cash needs and to use online to buy air tickets if i need them.

banks here say I cannot open a checking account as

they need a 1 year visa or a work permit.

Is there a way to get a Thai card somehow without having a bank account? or maybe there is a bank

that can provide bank services to tourists without a visa or work permit?

thank you so much

Try this card:

It's not a bank account but you can top up (reload) the card at any KTB branch.

From the card's terms/conditions:

9. The KTB e-Money Cardholder is able to refill cash in the KTB e-Money Card at the Bank's branches or other service points that the Bank opens for service providing in accordance with the following cash amounts specified by the Bank.

Minimum of 100 Baht/time/card and
Maximum of 50,000 Baht/time/card

The site mentions where to get it:

How to get Miracle Thailand card

  • Krung Thai Bank (KTB) branches or more details at www.ktb.co.th/ktb/en
  • KTB currency exchange booths throughout Thailand
  • The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA)
  • The Leading Travel Agencies in Thailand

Keep trying to open a Bangkok Bank savings account. They specifically provide guidance for opening accounts for tourists, you do not need a work permit.

Then, the ability to make card not present transactions can be activated.

Bangkok Bank, on their main website, has a page for foreigner account opening info, and includes what documents they will require depending on your stay/visa status:

http://www.bangkokbank.com/BangkokBank/PersonalBanking/SpecialServices/ForeignCustomers/Pages/Openinganaccountnew.aspx

It's correct that you don't legally need a work permit or 1-year visa as minimums to open a Thai bank account, although, a lot of branches adopt that as their individual policy. At least, BKK Bank as an organization is clear that they don't follow that policy for foreign account openers.

I live in isaan,i bank with SCB.They do an ATM card with online facilities.I used it last month to book an hotel room.My wife also banks with them. They are not very American friendly though.I had to fill out a form to the effect that i wasn't American and had no previous or present dealings with American companies or businesses over here.In fact the questions were a bit harsh.

Anyway,best of luck.
