What's the story with the Red plates on new vehicles ?

Was just reading a post where OP said "should have my white plates soon and can then get a canopy fitted ". I understand that new cars have Red plates for a couple of months but was surprised that he said he had to wait for the White plates before he could fit a canopy to his pick-up ??

Thx

When you fit a carryboy on a pickup, it needs to be re-registered with more seating capacity specified, and plates changed. He doesn't have to hold off getting his white plates, but it makes sense to only get them once, not twice.

Thanks for the reply.........

So if you buy a new pick up and wait until you've got your white plates and then decide to add a Carry boy or simply a Roller Top do you still have to re-register ?

I'm particularly interested in this topic as I'm collecting my new pick up from the Dealership today and it will obviously have Red Plates. I was thinking about adding a Roller Top or similar.

So would this be classed as a Canopy ? and would I have to

Re-register ? and if so is it a simple procedure ?

Sorry for the barrage of questions but as I've said on another post I've recently retired to Thailand and am finding this forum very helpful.

Thanks,

H

A lid on the tray is not the same, no.

A canopy fitting generally means the truck needs to be registered as a 7 seater, which means new white plates (with different color text).

Thanks, so if I add a lid onto the tray I can do this whilst still having Red Plates and no need to advise anyone ?

Cheers,

H.

Red plates are for you city boys, out here in smallsville they don't bother with red plates on new cars, and no plates of any description on a great many motorbikes!

Again as far as l remember you don't have to have red plates if you are going stay within your province while waiting for your main car reg No.

Most bike owners waiting for their plate don't go out of there province, well it seems to be that way here in middle-earth anyhow. biggrin.png

Here in Phuket the dealer will deliver with red plates, which are supposedly good for only 30 days but many Thais like to keep them on longer because new car, red plates, much face.

I have a swift with red plates which is three years old .Long story but i am suing the dealer who must be paying someone as the court case has been going for two years and i am no nearer getting it registered. The dealer in Bangkok not a small dealership . I have been told the manager sold my car to two people plus other cars and did a runner with 5 mill bht DONT PAY CASH Get a bank transfer . or on credit....

Just a note ( as a couple of months mentioned ) me's thought no more than 30 days on a red plate.

Funny, but this was always the rule.

I am afraid this reminder was just another campaign ending in nowhere land.

And this from @james6 supports what I have understood:

I have been told the manager sold my car to two people plus other cars and did a runner with 5 mill bht

As long as the cars are not registered (no plate) or have red plate the money is still with the dealer and has not flown to the manufacturer.

So the dealers are not in a hurry to do the proper registration.

A barefaced practice.

As i said the dealer says he did not get the money as his manager did a runner with my cash and in total 5mill bht so i have a three year old car i cant register cant sell and can only use locally as its on red plates. It is used for school runs by my wife and i had to buy a new one for longer trips. It seems the dealer cant be held responsible for his staff actions and after 2 years of court case i am no nearer getting anything sorted .i was assured by a lawyer before i sued the dealer that this was an open and shut case in my favor . So may be back handers are involved. TIT..

Things maybe changing, you can now check on-line..

Bought my Pickup on 8th Feb, noticed it was on the on-line system on Thursday of that week.. Thursday last week on-line show the number plates ready, had the full canopy fitted on that Thursday, but dealer could not collect and fit the new plates until this last Wednesday.

Decided to purchase the new Nissan Navara Double Cab.

After doing the 'rounds' of dealerships in Pattaya I decided to buy the Nissan - Got to say the whole purchasing process was handled very professionally - Went to showroom on Monday, booked the vehicle on Wednesday and collected it on Saturday.

I signed a lot of paperwork and I was a cash buyer no idea how much paperwork would be involved if you were financing the vehicle ??

I signed the form to allow them to apply for registration and I've been told they'll contact me when they can fit the White plates.

As I said so far so good - I'll let you know how long it takes for the White plates.

Received our EV the end Nov. We wanted to register it ourselves as Mrs Jas had reserved a 'Lucky Number Plate'. Got the paperwork sbout a month later. Number was released (early Feb) and we went and got the EV registered the next day.... only got one 200thb as one day forgot to fill in the book and was just unlucky as got stopped up north ...first time ever that we were asked for the book .. and it was the third road block that morning that we had passed through.

When on red plates why do you have to write in a book when you go out at night?

I have to admit that I never whilst in my home Province.

TBH if you want to try and avoid any problems ... if using after dark write something in ... if outside your Province write where you are going ...eg driving to wat whatever and back ... if stopped when off route you can always say ... got lost ...gps my d ... just play the game and smile .. DO write using a soft pencil and rub out each day

You can ask for the Book from your dealer...normally it looks like the Ten Commandants Parchment ,and its that old,a potential health risk imo. Just put The other end of Thailand.and no one bothers you. long as you have it ,and its within the Red Plate permitted hours. Doesnt matter now, but in Curfew Time Era the Thai Army were superb, they gave you permission to drive after dark if you Hotel was miles away. They made Phone Call and gave you a paper, still expected i few M16 round though.thumbsup.gif

If the dealer doesn't supply a log book with the red plates, the plates may be fake. Look for the embossed stamp on legally issued red plates. Cops LOVE shonky plates!

The legal maximum for red plates is 30 days but it's only a real hungry cop (or a dipstick) that will nail you for this.

Cops turning a blind eye to no log book and/or driving red plates at night is all bit of a lottery. You takes your chances and you pays your money. Or maybe not.

Bored cops on a ticket quota also tend to pick on out-of-province red plates.... or rather 'not Bangkok' red plates when driving in Bangkok.

Having no plates at all is a bit more serious but blind eyes and backhanders can still apply. However, if one gets a proper Nazi cop, confiscation of the vehicle is one of their legally sanctioned options.
