Since we have had no reports of anybody being banned yet I suspect immigration may not be strictly enforcing the rules yet. Perhaps a longer overstay or being a repeat offender will trigger the banning at this time.

Yes ubonjoe i think you are right.I guess at the end of the day it is still up to the immigration officer at the time. Some are more forgiving then others

When did your friend depart Thailand?

Not surprising, they want people to come back and keep spending money.

20K baht for an 89 day extension may indeed prove very popular.

He left yesterday

He may of then got lucky as the rule took effect March 20. But then again just because they did not stamp his passport as banned it does not mean his details are in the computer and noted as such. He needs to be aware of such.

If you count on staying 5 years then the elite visa is almost as expensive. (but legal)

Sure -- but the Elite is paid up-front lump-sum and the 89-day extension version is pay as you go and as necessary.

It could be that the 90 day rule began on March 20 .

March 20 being the first day of overstay,

Or it may be something else.

Wow, you and your mate must be truly blessed!

Four days ago, after the bans start, you're arrested with a 40 day overstay, but after a night in a cell released and avoid a potential 5 year ban. "Under the new law i should of been banned for what 5 years?" Then yesterday the first report of someone not being banned when leaving with a 90+ day overstay happens to be one of your stand up top geezer mates! "He should of been banned for 1 year right?"

Both timely reports come from someone that has been here a short time, overstated twice, and appears in every overstay thread criticising anti overstay opinions. I did/do expect a honeymoon period and hope IO's have certain ongoing discretion, but until there is a report from a more credible person, without a clear agenda, I will reserve judgement on the enforcement of the new rules.

He is truly a blessed individual. We all look up to him.

Lets hope they do start to ban people soon, there is no excuse for it, it's not cool, clever or right to break the law.

YES!

I could not agree more.

Not only it's not cool, but the weather seems to be quite hot over here in Bangkok today.

They are destabilizing the country, according to this.

Depends on what the law is.

If that were true, then he would not have to pay the 20k baht overstay fine.

This appears to be a phony photoshopped photo. Too little info and nothing in Thai. Very lame troll attempt.

I think all three of us are talking about different things lol.

PS I had a good laugh when I saw that "overstay stamp".

I must admit to being surprised by this report. It seems the IOs are being allowed to use their judgment on who to ban and who not. I thought the rules would be inflexible. I actually wonder now if the rules are only normally intended to target specific nationalities.

Or maybe "surrendering" and getting a ban means being processed through court. So the airport could be an exception if the IOs do not want to bother with the court hassle and the passenger is ready to go.

You know...English...Thai. Maybe they meant surrendering and being prosecuted or arrested and being prosecuted.

Just saying.
