Staying around the Nana area, without walking to far what can people suggest for

1. a good seafood restaurant

2. A good place to find a nice steak

Doesnt have to be super cheap, nor does it have to be super expensive, just looking for some suggestions

of tasty quality thanks

Mediocre steaks can be had in the B500-1000 range but a top quality steak, properly cooked will cost darn near New York prices...for instance, the New York steakhouse in The Marriott Hotel near Nana; great steak but you will leave at least B3000 lighter, especially if you want a drink and a glass of wine. The Landmark Hotel has a steak restaurant but it has had very mixed reviews. A lot of people like Neil's Tavern near the US Embassy.

There are many new restaurants in Bangkok and there might be some hidden steak gems out there. Check out www. [email protected], a free local lifestyle weekly with a lot of restaurant listings and reviews. Their website has a lot of info.

The restaurant ap "EATIGO" has become very popular in the last year and has great local dining deals; up to 50% off at some restaurants.

Not at all fancy but if you like fish 'n chips, "Bus Stop" on Soi 4 is as good as any...huge portion, crisp and light. Not cod, but very tasty.

Be careful with "seafood" restaurants in central Bangkok...there are a few notorious rip-off joints. Maybe another poster will remember the name of the one sometimes in the news for the outrageous prices charged visiting tourists. Often the fish prices quoted are "per 100g"...it's a shark tank out there.

Hmmm...don't know why the font changed when I posted the magazine link...strange.

What you are looking for doesnt exist in that area.

For seafood, you best bet is Raan Ahan Talay Krung Thep, on Pra Ram 9, right beside the hospital, from Nana about 100 baht in a taxi.

Best place to eat in that area is La Monita in Matahun Plaza...a five minute walk from the front of Soi 4 but it's Mexican food.

For some meat try Hyde and Seek on Soi Ruamrudee....the food there is pretty good but with fairly high prices.

Soi 11 has a few options not least the Indian at Fraser Suites...they do a tasting menu for 1000 Baht that is decent for one person...good cocktails too.

An alternative might be The Marriott which does a lunch and dinner buffet every day on the ground floor, International Cafe I think it's called. A large range of seafood including a baked whole fish, king crab, prawns, smoked salmon etc. They also do a rib roast as well as some slow cooked beef dishes which are quite good. Price around 1800 baht although dinner is more expensive than lunch IIRC.

Surely you jest??

Within 200 meters of Nana there is a superabundance of choice - from cheap to super expensive.

The Landmark is usually my "go to" place, either the Huntsman Pub in the basement or the rooftop Steakhouse if you want to splurge.

Even more expensive - as already mentioned - would be the New York Steakhouse in the Marriott Hotel. Excellent lunchtime Buffet there too, although I personally prefer the Plaza Athene in Wireless Road.

Cheap(ish) end would be Tony Romas almost directly opposite Nana.

Indian / Middle Eastern - there are a dozen good places in Nana Soi 3 (opposite the Nana Soi 4 "Entertainment Plaza").

Seriously, in that area you are spoilt for choice without a doubt.

Sorry P, I wasnt specific enough, I was referring to Seafood places.

The place I mentioned works out about 350/400 baht per head.

Tom Ka Gai large bowl.

Pla (ka pong) sam rot.

Tort man kung.

Tort man pla.

Sai thung klap baan, LOL.

Notice you didnt recommend any seafood places, I am all ears in that part of town, no offence.

Yes within that part of town, there are plenty of places, hotels etc.

But to my taste they are too farangised and poncified.

As usual, OP doesnt mention his price range, is 1500 baht per head too much?

Perhaps a 50 baht on soi 5 is what he wants?

That Tony Romas closed a few years ago, new one opened at the Terminal 21 mall (Asok)

For interesting dining, several of the newer major malls have interesting options ranging from $$ to $$$$$. On the Sukhumvit line, the Embassy Mall has "Pauls" a very good french bistro/bakery and quite a few upscale restaurants as well as a decent "Dean & DeLuca's"

Lots of choices in Central world and Siam Paragon as well...some surprisingly decent options in the food court. There is also an excellent food court in the Discovery Mall just past Paragon.

Back to steak again, If you can enjoy a very nicely cooked, quality steak in very -um- downscale environment, go the the gourmet grocery store on the 6th floor of Central World and wander to the meat dept. Pick the steak of your dreams, pay for it then take it to the adjacent cafe where for B99 (last year) they will skillfully cook it and serve it with sauteed seasonal vegetables and a salad. You can even buy a bottle of wine in the nearby wine dept. They will uncork and provide a goblet if you request.

If it is seafood you are after I would suggest Phuket. I can't imagine why anybody would buy seafood away from the coast.

UK coast is notorious for sending all its quality produce to London, Paris and Madrid/Barca!

That's where the punters' money is. Seaside tourists mostly want cheaper stuff!

Phuket may be different as there is real consumer money around on that island. Even so, I'll bet the fish producer's do a first sweep early in the morning and pick out all the really good stuff for Bangkok and export!!

here is an OK seafood place;

Baan Klang Naam, at the very end of soi 14 Rama 3

thai style, by the river, not costly, has FRESH seafood, mostly thai customers, some farang,

BUT you can buy a drink, for example Gin Tonic or Scotch on the rocks without buying the whole bottle

been there many times, one out of those times they were not up to par

(as for steaks, don't really know, don't think that I've ever had a very good steak in Thailand)

I have become very impressed with the menu and quality of food at Monsoon Restaurant in Soi 8. I heard there was a new chef that turned the place around. You will find a variety of items, from seafood to Mexican, and everything I have tried is great. The fact that the tables are full at all times, is a good sign. (No, I don't work for them, just a satisfied customer).

Carl's Jr., Sukhumvit Road near soi 4 (other side). Best steaks in BKK by far.

Best steak? Really??

Prices & other info please?

Cheers

It would be interesting if it wasn't completely ridiculous of course.

Soi 8 "Viva" every-time I am in Bangkok

http://vivacafebangkok.com/

I believe Viva is run and owned by the same folks behind the nearby Monsoon restaurant at the Adelphi Suites Hotel on Soi 8. In fact, if you're around that area, you'll often see their staff walking down the soi carrying pizzas and such from Monsoon's to the Viva place a block up the soi.

For seafood around the Nana area, I like the Rosabieng restaurant on Suk Soi 11 about 400 meters into the soi on the left hand side of the street. Indoor and outdoor dining, has a railroad motif, but mainly, has a huge Thai food menu with lots and lots of seafood choices, at reasonable instead of ripoff prices.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g293916-d1755494-Reviews-Rosabieng_Restaurant-Bangkok.html

For steak, I've been to the Landmark's steakhouse and thought it was fine, though a bit pricey. For a more moderate price, there's a new Mexican restaurant in the Rajah complex between Sukhumvit Soi 2 and 4 called The Mexican that is surprisingly nicely appointed inside. But more importantly, they have an Australian ribeye on the menu for 800b or so that's supposed to be pretty good.

I had their steak fajitas last week, for which they use Australian flank steak that's been marinated for 24 hours. And their flank steak made for one of the best beef fajitas dishes I've ever had. So I'm inclined to believe they'd do ever better with their ribeye. And as I said, the restaurant's interior is quite nice -- not at all sleazy as are various other spots around the neighborhood.

Here's My 2 BAHT worth:

- MY FAV: El Gaucho Argentinian Steakhouse. Soi 19. I really like this place. My wife gets fish. I got steak and we shared. Glass of wine.

- The Landmark steakhouse - Rib Room & Bar. Good but darn expensive. Awesome view. Very romantic. Only do this once a year.

- There is a good seafood place down Soi Four, close to The Dawin Hotel. Pretty good. It's a walk down the soi and away from Striker's and Hillary 4 and go-go-go-leave-with-nothing bars.

- Never, EVER, Never go to Tony Roma's at Terminal 21. Seriously. Worst meal of my life. I wrote a bad review for them on Tripadvisor.

- Charley Brown's Mexican has good beef fajitas. Cool place. Next to an incredible fish restaurant -- I think it's call New Zealand Fish Company or something like that. Soi 11 or soi 13. Odd side of street. Some cool restaurants clustered in a courtyard. Worth visiting.

- Of course, walked in the Marriott. Saw buffet and walked out. A bit expensive.

- I thought Carl's Jr. was a hamburger place.

OK.

explore Nana Plaza .... some nice desserts walking around there. Just make sure they are short and no

taller than about 5ft 1inch.

MM..Plus 1 with your recommendation of "Baan Klang Naam".

Have you ever tried "Kin Lom Chom Saphan" , also on the river at the foot of the Rama-8 Bridge. Similar in look and style but a bit less expensive and somewhat less formal. If you are interested, Google them online. It is difficult to find the soi accessing the restaurant and having their phone number handy to call and get directions sometimes necessary though most taxi drivers seem to know it.

Crowded weekends. You can call and book a riverside table most weeknights..

Really bus stop in soi 4. It used to be great but two years ago it must have changed hands or something. No good reports recently.

I specifically referred to their "Fish & Chips", and not recommended by only me. There was a lengthy topic on this forum several months ago regarding "Fish & Chips" and Bus Stop got a lot of positive posts.

Bus stop is still in the hands of the same family that has had it for years.

well, never thought of Baan Klang Naam as formal

No, this S Rama 8 place I haven't even heard of but could fancy trying.

I assume it is on the East bank of the river?

Is it upstream or downstream of the bridge?

Seafood joint is it?

Am frequently in the vicinity on my way to/from Baan Moo-Worachak-Yaowarat, should check it out and see if

I can go there using my own boat. Maybe easy to moor there, maybe not.

OP would benefit from widening his horizon.

the following not linked to OP by any means,

just thought I would share it:

Carl's Jr. Best steaks in Bangkok outside of America. Hamburger style, 100% pure meat. Unbeatable. Would never set foot in a McDonald's or Burger King again.
