YANGON: -- The US cable television giant CNN has last Friday teamed up with SkyNet telecommunications company less than a month after the company was implicated in a bribery scandal, The Irrawaddy reported last Saturday.

SkyNet, a subsidiary of Shwe Than Lwin Media company, is chaired by Kyaw Win who is said to have close links with Myanmar’s previous government and the military regime.

Under the agreement, CNN will help SkyNet launch 24-hour Burmese-language news network called Channel One, according to a press release by SkyNet. CNN will provide consulting, capacity building for the employees and training for news production and technical operations.

Myint Myint Win, president of Shwe Than Lwin Media, described the partnership with CNN as a “milestone” for SkyNet.

Greg Beitchman, vice president of CNN International’s commercial content sale and partnership said CNN is confident that SkyNet will be able to achieve the same journalistic standards as CNN.
