I'm returning to Bangkok in May for a few months, and I need some dental work. Specifically I need a couple of crowns and a root canal. Any advise about dentists would be greatly appreciated - both recomendations and things/people to avoid.

Believe cost is about 3,500 per tooth for RCT. Gold pin is 1 or 2,000 and crown with high gold content is about 8,000 as I recall. Most dental offices can do this but you may want to go to a hospital as they all have dental departments and probably more experience for foreigners (your roots are likely to be a lot deeper than they expect). Remember this takes a number of visits so start soon after you arrive. With no rush should be no pain. If you have to rush it can be very unpleasant.

there is a very good dental hospital on sukhumvit soi 49 in bangkok.

hard to advise on prices as it will depend on which tooth is being treated, some teeth have one root canal, some have three and it may depend on why you need to have the root canal treatment.

these days (unless you are suffering from an acute dental infection) it is good clinical practice to complete root canal treatment in one visit. should be painless but you have to keep your mouth open for an hour or so.

likewise with crowns, the price will depend on the tooth involved, the amount of preparation the tooth will need and the type of crown that will be made to restore the tooth. usually two visits.

BNH - Bangkok Nursing Home Hospital on Soi Convent Silom has a good dental clinic as well. Its a good place to go as they have very good and ontime service and competent well trained dentists. One crown there on a back tooth cost my friend about 12,000 - 14,000 baht from memory. The dentist was a specialist and teacher at Mahidol Uni, so he knew his stuff. He sent my friend home on two occasions because he did not like the colour of the crown. So he was a bit of a perfectionist. A good sign.

That's where I usually go.

I had a root canal as well as a crown done there on a very damaged back molar and the work was very professionnal. No complaint.

The price was in the range given by Nedkelly.
