Thailand to raise water transport safety standards in Andaman Sea



PHUKET, 27 June 2016 (NNT) - The Marine Department signed an agreement with relevant agencies to raise water transport safety standards.

Deputy Transport Minister Ormsin Chivapruck chaired a seminar on water transport safety, which was held in Phuket province over the weekend. Among the attendees were Marine Department Director-General Sorasak Saensombat, Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada, representatives from six tour agencies based in provinces along the Andaman Sea, and official from related agencies.

An agreement was signed to establish a water transport safety center and to align safety regulations to international standards, in a bid to foster tourist confidence.

According to Marine Department chief Sorasak, provinces along the Andaman Sea are considered to be among the world’s most-visited tourist destinations, making tourist safety a priority. These provinces include Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Ranong, Trang and Satun.

To this end, four safety measures will be adopted in these provinces. They include measures to enhance accident response and prevention, extend aid to accident victims, and support safety-related research and development.

Heard this a decade ago yet it all remains the same.

I would like to see the exact new measures to enhance safety. Looking at the article there is nothing solid mentioned.

Yet another gabfest on safety. Must be the third of fourth this month. I suspect the lunches must be the drawcard.

Evidently an agreement has been signed so now the water safety issued has bee solved and tourist lives are no longer at risk.

They have yet to ensure safety in Pattaya and Phuket. The Andaman is a lot bigger. Perhaps they should start a little closer to home before taking on a sea

Wouldn't some standards first exist before they could be raised?

Bangladesh

Sweden

UK

Australia......................Quite a range to choose from. I suspect the Bangladesh/Indonesia end of the market is favoured!

And like AIS the Thais will exempt themselves from whatever regulations they come up with.
