For any of the Burmites out there, I was wondering if there were anyland bordercrossings for extended stays. Im trying to avoid going back to Bkk to fly into RGN. Im just south of Ranong, and would love to be able to enter the country through victoria point. Also, If i get my visa worked out online, do I need a physical addy for them to send it to, or can I pick it up on arrival at Victoria Point (hopefully) or RGN Airport. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Ossie on the move.

Regarding the online visa - you'll need to telephone the embassy (Union of Myanmar) in Bangkok to find out about getting the physical visa put into your pp - but my guess is your passport will need to go up to Bangkok to have the visa put in it.

Overland travel, on a tourist visa, is entirely possible now through Kawthoung (Burmese name for Victoria Point). I have encountered several travelers in recent months who have negotiated this route. Normally though - Kawthoung Immigration can only issue a stamp-in/stamp-out single-entry arrangement, not a full tourist visa. You can check with the Embassy for this as well.

Best way to go is Ranong-Kawthoung, then Myeik (by high-speed ferry), then get a flight to Yangon from Myeik.

You will need to contact the fellow in charge of the Hotels Tours and Travels (HTT) office in Kawthoung to see if they will permit this route. There are 2 chaps there, U Tin Moe Naing, and U Moe Kyaw.

Drop in to Moby Dick restaurant on the waterfront at Kawthoung for help getting contact. Manager there is Thein Gar, there's an aussie expat hanging around there as well say g'day to him, he's not hard to find.

Idea of prices. Overnight accomm in Kawthoung USD$25-30

Ferry ticket to Myeik USD$25

Overnight accomm in Myeik USD$25 at either Dolphin or Palemon

Ticket to Yangon with Myanma Airways (USD$105) must be purchased one day prior.

Hope this helps as a start.

Thanks for the good info. I tried to get a tourist visa issued at Victoria point, but right now they are working on a stamp in/out basis maximum 3 days. They say that the area is opened to tourists and a slow boat takes 2 days to Rangoon. Anyone thinking of going to burma via this route, MAKE SURE TO GET YOUR VISA IN BKK, before heading south. Nothing worse than getting to the finish line only to be told you have to start over. Back to Bkk I go. Thanks for the help.
