Two civilians shot dead in Narathiwat

NARATHIWAT: Two civilians – a man and a woman – were separately shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Narathiwat province on Friday.

The first incident took place at about 4 pm on the Narathiwat-Sungai Padi road in Ban Yaning, Cho Airong district. It was reported that the victim, 36-year old Manapiyoh Hajijehmu, was tending to some business next to a rubber plantation when the gunman dismounted from a motorcycle, approached him and fired several shots at him with a pistol.

The gunman and his accomplice then quickly sped away.

About two hours afterward in Ra-ngae district, 49-year old Mrs Suwanna Promka was riding a motorcycle for home on a local road in Tanyong Limore when two men riding on another motorbike approached her from behind.

Then the pillion rider pulled out a handgun and fired several shots into her body causing her to fall on the road. Then the pillion rider grabbed her motorbike and sped away.

Mrs Suwanna was later rushed to Ra-ngae district hospital by witnesses but she was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Police suspected that the two assailants were militants.
