Pattaya going downhill!

What happened to Makati...it's of the 2 or 3 areas of Manila that isn't an out and out slum and a very pleasant place to stay in the Philippines.

The difference with Makati was PROBABLY that the girls etc moved to Angeles. If Pattaya closes the barbeers/ gogos there is no where else to go, and you ignore the fact that thousands of Thais would lose their incomes.

Also, does anyone actually think Pattaya will ever become a nice place to stay? Everything they do makes it a worse environment.

I still have to wonder just why people that like such just don't go to where they are, in Bkk, and leave Pattaya for the mongers. Not all change is progress, or indeed "good".

But there's only 2 mongers left in Pattaya...

pinays are sweet and more fun. They all paint their nails(unlike thais) and look much more feminine.and ofc you can have normal conversation in english on top of everything.Bars in Manila don't have male servers, sketchy and pushy male characters. But I do like going to Pattaya every 2-3 months but limit my stay to 10-15 days

At present, we have too many condos, hotels, massage parlours, restaurants and bars.   I doubt that we need another mall.  Central Festival Mall is great.

take away all the McDonald's, tailor shops, "3D shows" and jewelry shops on Walking Street and replace them with bars again - and my heart will start to heal again. :)

Seriously, the choco lovers aren't in Pattaya for the wonderful beach, or the pollution free swimming, or for the efficient, elegant infrastructure, so why are they there?

First, I am in that category, who has been living in or close to Pattaya for some years.

Who don`t drink alcohol, and you don`t find me anywhere near hookers, or bars for that matter.

The reason I first went here, was just for relaxing and to discover this part of the country, after staying for years in Phuket. I met my wife in Pattaya, and bought a house here, right outside. She wanted to be close to her family, so we decided Pattaya to be a good place to live.

I have actually not regret it for a minute. Pattaya has much to offer me and my wife, not just expats who live their lives in or near a bar.

You have the nice area around Mabprachan Lake, where we reside. You have the very nice beaches south of Pattaya/Jomtien, as Ban Amphur and Bang Saray a short drive away.

Small fishing communities, and you actually have it all. All the places for the daily tours, crocodile farm, zoo etc. are places you are right in the middle of.

You have all the possibilities in the city, cinemas, centers and all the restaurants you ever need. And you will find some nice places from Naklua in the north, to Jomtien in the south, if you just care to look around a little. The Pratamnak area is not so bad either.

People who are bashing Pattaya and its area, don`t have a clue what is really going on around and in Pattaya and Jomtien.

I don`t regret staying here for a minute.

Range of shopping malls, markets, extensive range of Foreign products in a number of supermarkets.

Close proximity to BKK and the airport with choice of travel links. U Tpao airport also serves Samui, Phuket etc.

Baht bus transport for central Pattaya which is cheap and convenient.

Good selection of both rented and for sale accommodation at affordable prices.

Restaurants galore.

Selection od schools.

Selection of hospitols.

I think the many of the tailor and jewellery shops have been there longer than many of the bars.

You mean, you understand the silliness but are scared of being called a member of the real estate brigade? Well, you just ain't gonna be able to say anything good about Pattaya.

No, I'lll continue to call it as I see it. I own a nice house in one of the nicer estates in Pattaya, I have no reason to talk down Pattaya.

I love living in Pattaya, however, traffic is dreadful, that's a fact, there is an oversupply of condos, that's a fact.

OK, I probably gave yaagjon too much credit. My bad. I didn't give you any credit, so you're good. :)

BTW, the end of your 6-month deathwatch on Harbor Mall, which you've grouped with The Avenue, is approaching. Darn! I was gettin' used to having it around.

For the OP--to bring us back on topic--the gross violation of TVF Poster LIGHTS ON AT NIGHT rule is, you see, one of his several sources of discomfort with our beloved cesspool. Why he can't find enough bars in Pattaya, or, having somehow managed to find one--among all the McDonald's, tailor shops, "3D shows" and jewelry shops--why he just can't enjoy himself in said bar and sleep soundly without worrying about condo ownership or lack thereof in Pattaya, I dunno. Never bothered me any.

But that's just one thing on the OP's list. I wonder if in the TVF Pattaya Redevelopment Plan there might have to be some sort of tradeoff. Would more lights on at night be sufficient reassurance to make up for the lack of sacred green space? Or, if there were more green space, could there also be few lights on at night in the surrounding condo buildings? Must we have both? How many potholes will be allowed? So many vexing questions . . . .

The same reason (both) mongers are out trawling the same old traps every night. They aren't hopelessly looking for a bed mate for what she is (same, smokin' hot eye-candy she was last week), they are looking for the long-term partner they desperately seek and especially what she can become. The trophy wife.

Seriously?

Blah blah blah what sea side resort doesn't have an oversupply of accommodation.

Patong Beach, Phuket around Fall of 1978. Only 2 accommodation choices on the whole sweeping expanse of the bay with the cheaper option only having electric for fan and light until the generator ran out of gas in the wee small hours. Their restaurant had about 4 choices of fish and if you picked one that wasn't already in the freezer, they went out and caught it for you.

those who dislike pattaya can move elsewhere.Plain and simple!.No need to beat the poor horse if it's already dead...You came, you saw, you conquered. No need to bash and be considerate for those who like living or have to make a living there. And there are "only" hundreds of cities in the world and a several of them can last you a lifetime. Why force yourself to live in a place you don't enjoy anymore? true, Pattaya is facing overgrowth problems. The reason it floods every time it rains is that most of the city and outskirts of the city is now paved and water has no place to go. it rises and flows slow. The rising population because of "the gold rush" which creates heavy traffic most of the day, also is responsible for the bad smell and trash.but so what? there is no perfect place.I was recently in Medellin,Colombia and stayed 1 month.Perfect!..Clean, green, blue skies, mountainous, avg. temp. of 28day-time/20night-time throughout the year and lots of chicks. But no ocean :(  .Back to the topic,Pattaya isn't going downhill...Actually the whole world is!

Who would want to live in a place like that...give me a Central Mall, with artisinal chocolates and breads, any day.

There are many beaches around the world without Central malls, or other signs of civilized life, to which all who want quiet and solitude can move to.

Exactly. After hearing the same thing for the last 10 years, I finally found The Solution for our moaners and whingers a couple years ago. I think one whinging old fossil, Pattaya Pat, wisely must have taken it, as he disappeared from the forum a few months thereafter. He & Mr. Midnight are livin' it up now in paradise, as OP and his ilk could be. Why wait?

Back home you can do simple nice things like go for a walk around the shops with your daughter, nice wide pavements, it's clean, it's safe, civilised folk of all ages walking around. but here you can't even do simple pleasures like that. The place stinks, it has no pavements, all and sundry are looking at you like you are from mars and you would be afraid some physcho driver is going to mount the pavement and wipe you out....joke place.

Totally relaxed, pal. Does that bother you? Our bashers, haters, whingers, cynics, naysayers, harpies, curmudgeons, self-righteous moralists, brown envelope bots, tea money choristers, professional victims, deathwatchers, poor-mouthers, finger-pointers, conspiracy theorists, handwringers, busybodies, know-it-alls, blowhards, scaremongers, economists, Dudley Do-Rights, Nervous Nellies, Goody Two-Shoes, ace asphalt/drainage/driving/parking/traffic/tunneling/concrete/urban planning experts (to mention but a few), real estate appraisers, 99 percenters, schoolmarms, cupcakes, pissants, etc. (see the 72-page Thai Visa Brigades) are just such a lot of fun. Can't resist. But I do try to alleviate some of the discontent and suffering if possible, as with the above post.

All of 23 years old at the time and just completed my first 2-year tour in the Saudi desert, it was truly paradise.

Central Mall on the other hand.... has air conditioning.

It wasn't the place you remember so much as the time. I can think of twenty beaches in 10 different countries that match the description given. It's all been discovered and there's no going back. Probably just as well, because I don't think I could stay in a bamboo hut on the beach any longer. Even if it was just $1/night.

Why you want to pop my balloon? It was paradise and I had 7000 quid end of contract bonus burning a hole in my pocket. In hindsight, I could have bought the whole <deleted>' Patong bay back then.

Jericoacoara, Ceará, Brazil circa 1990... go pop that balloon (it's bloody awful now).

Funnily enough though, as one gets older, the charms of the semi-nomadic beach idyll does evaporate... but I do not need fancy chocolate and designer bread to tell me that I am living the life. A hot shower and a cold beer will suffice.

Agreed, though my druthers extend only to the hot shower. I do feel sorry for those that can't survive without all the crap of modern life.

What could be better than waking up everyday to the sound of gentle waves on the sandy shore?

Sadly for the must have's, they will never know such as the resorts never have huts on the beach, prefering to have high rises around the swimming pool, to make even more money on the available space. Only the cheap places have huts actually on the sand.

Wouldn't it be hideous to have to live on an island in a hut with not much around but nature.  Actually, some of the most expensive holiday destinations on the planet cater to people who want just that (albeit with 5 star luxury):

luxury-hotel-on-a-private-island-of-fiji-4.jpg

This is on a private island in Fiji.  Horrible looking isn't it.  No traffic jams, no high-rise condo units.......and look at all those terrible trees.  There is almost no development that I can see.  It must be going "downhill."  Maybe if they would just come and take a look at Pattaya-Jomtien they could learn something about development that is going uphill.
