NAKHON SI THAMMARAT: -- A roadside cleaner in the south of Thailand had an unusual duty to perform in the early hours of this morning - she delivered a baby!

The frantic father had parked his pick-up outside the police station in downtown Nakorn Sri Thammarat after his wife went into labour on the way to hospital, reported Thairath

Ekasit Ritthimat, 35, the dad, ran into council cleaner Paweena Chaopheuk, 60, who told him to go into the police station to get help.

But the baby's head was already out as mum Siriporn Chujan, 32, lay down on the front seat of the Isuzu.

"I had just been sweeping up litter around 4 am," said the cleaner. "I told the dad to get the police and I set to work. It was easy and I was happy to help. I am so happy for the parents."

As police and medics arrived at the scene a beautiful baby girl had been delivered by the road sweeper. They took over and took mother and child to the hospital where everyone is doing fine.

Ekasit said that he was thrilled with his lovely new arrival, his third daughter. He thanked Paweena and all the other people who had helped him and his wife.

Bet Trig could have done that with the help of his trusty (original?) brush

I asked me mate Trig if he had been present at a childbirth before and what was it like? He said "yes just once, it was dark then suddenly became very light!"

Nice to read a news story with a happy ending. Wonder if the parents have named their new girl Dee Max? :D
