Thailand hopes to be leading country for investment in digital sector

BANGKOK, 17 August 2016 (NNT) - The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has expressed confidence that Thailand will become one of the world’s top countries for investment in the digital industry in the next 20 years.

ICT Minister Uttama Savanayana on Wednesday said all countries realized the importance of digital technology and the Thai government had policy to guide the Thai economy and society into the digital era. The government had developed 20-year national strategies with clear operational plans consistent with the “Thailand 4.0” master plan, said the minister

Mr. Uttama added that projects to develop ICT infrastructure had much progressed due to good cooperation from the general public and the private sector. The projects include the “Pracharat” Internet project aimed at providing high-speed Internet access for the people.

The ministry would urgently develop the work of the public sector with the use of digital systems and updating ICT laws in line with changes in the digital world, said the minister.

The ministry also set a goal for Thailand to be a leading country in ASEAN that uses the digital technology in moving the country forward.

Attempting to implement a 20 year plan in the fast changing world of technology is pure folly. What is relevant today will be replaced by something else in a handful of years, and the entire plan goes out the window.

Interesting to see that the driving idea behind the whole concept is "less for more".

Seems to me this plan must have been in operation for quite some time already.

I hope to have 50 trillion baht in my bank account.

That's the great thing about hoping.  You can just sit back and hope.  No work needed.

Only a leading country not a hub, how demoralising.

They've begun to realize, Thailand isn't what it used to be.  Dreams of being a hub are distant memories.  Today, it's all about a leading country.

Ever been to Shenzhen.

You got no <expletive deleted> chance. Dreamers.

My Thai friend is into the IT business, sometimes i join him when he has chinese business associates. They need me to have a good conversation (in english of course) with their supplyers.

None of his Thai collegues is sufficient enough in English to have a good conversation during a long night dinner. The Chinese speak better english than me though and are only 22 years old.

Looking at the way they spend money ,or car (plus driver) they all have in BKK those guys must be doing something very well.  Also they are learning Thai language now and can communicate pretty well in Thai.

Thailand is so far behind the rest of the world

Given that the language if IT documentation worldwide, is predominantly English, these IT guys will always be behind the 8-ball. All up to the minute security related bulletins and update bulletins are in English and most Thai IT "professionals" cannot understand any English. Hoping is all they can do.

Well they might have to shelve "the gateway"... AKA great wall of Thailand. Ping times behind a layer 7 silent proxy of 300ms won't cut it in the real world of global finance. A company trading under these conditions stands to lose literally millions of dollars per second. If you want to  talk the talk, it's handy if you can walk the walk. More unrealistic nonsensical hubris.

Which in essence means they want someone else to pay for what they aim to control.

Hope and several trips to the Wat and "for sure" it's going to happen. :-)

Given all of the programming languages, development platforms, coding paradigms and web innovations originating from Thailand, this seems very doable.

Leading country for investment in digital sector?

Okayyyy. Maybe. If that nice Mr Prayuth can salvage the economy he's largely responsible for wrecking. But I'd be quite surprised after watching him on TV bawling out more journalists last evening.

No doubt that he's staying on though... Elections or no elections. Thais will wake up one day to what that nice Mr Prayuth really is, and then there will be mayhem.

Hmmm. So it shouldn't be hard to tell us what 10 of them are then? Or is my sarcasm early warning system on the blink again?

Welcome news for all skimmers and scammers.

Anyway, most government offices, cop shops etc are still using illegal copies of Windows 7.
