PM voices support for demolition of illegal resorts in Phu Tab Boek

BANGKOK: -- Operators of illegal resorts and guest houses in Phu Tab Boek mountainous retreat have one of the two options – either they dismantle the premises themselves or the state will demolish them, said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha on Wednesday.

However, the prime minister indicated that the government might work out some ways to help out if the operators willingly move out and let the officials to carry out the demolition.

He brushed aside complaints by some of the operators that they had invested 100-300 million baht in loans obtained by commercial banks to build their resorts and now they are to be demolished. He said they should not have invested in the first place because they were fully aware that they had occupied the land illegally.

The prime minister stated that his government had been trying to reclaim the encroached land and to redistribute them to the landless poor so they would have a place to make a living.

He blamed previous administrations for doing nothing to stop the encroachment of state land and the widespread misuse of land originally meant for agricultural purpose. He also criticized previous governments of merely giving out land to the landless without giving them any guidance or help in the management of the land to make it productive.

Earlier this week, the governor of Phetchabun province gave the operators a seven-dayreprieve to pack up their belongings after which officials will carry on the demolition.

The reprieve was in response to a protest by Hmong tribesmen – several of them resort operators – who have demanded that the demolition be suspended.

This country is awash with illegally build and occupied land all around Thailand,

most of which are a protected nature reserves and land ear marked for future

generations of Thai people, both landless and the needy, so I'm in full support

of the PM saying that the buck stops here, and start putting order into place where

chaos is now reigning supreme.....

Dirt is more important than blood??? I await patiently for the Good General to announce that ALL outstanding criminal offenders be bought to justice NOW. eg the Red Bull heir, the murderers of a number of Thais and Farang as seen in these pages over the past few years - etc.

A very long history of this in Thailand, nice to see some action taken to stop it. Let's wait and see if any of this governments cronies are told to pack up and go as well.

Indeed. A few years ago, a former coup prime minister and upright and law-abiding former army general - a colleague of our favourite political meddler and schemer Prem Tinsulanonda, was found to have built a large holiday home on encroached land in a national park between Saraburi and Nakhon Ratchasima. That hoo-ha lasted about 10 minutes as operation CYA sprang into action, though the person involved did demolish the home. Eventually, after protesting his innocence and uprightness for some months. No word about relinquishing the illegal land titles he (presumably knowingly) came by though. No legal action taken. Obviously. Shamefully.

The sense of entitlement these people have is enormous, and it's high time some of them saw prison bars. From the inside.

Ahh so the "Red Meo" have resorts up here, so that explains why the government would demolish these and not others. Red is from the 60'-70's so nothing to do with what we currently designate as Reds ( Just info for our troll team :D ) These are Reds that People's Republic of China's Hmong, who they supported in Vietnam days as a counterweight to the US/Thai Hmong in Laos.

the amount of illegal resorts/buildings etc in Thailand on govt land/national parks is beyond a joke. While it is great to see that they are demolishing these ones as well as others the people that built them need to do jail time and be fined big time so others realize it isnt worth it. What is needed is for the govt to go through all the provinces and demolish all illegal buildings etc and then fine the owners huge amounts for building them in the first place, it should also apply to everyone, rich, poor,  red, yellow etc, no one should be immune, trouble is no one has the balls to do so, they are just being selective.

I will believe he is serious when land department employee's who sell fake land titles go to jail. Maybe if enough illegal property get's seized the losing owners may take revenge on the corrupt land department staff if they don't get their investment back.

Agree and IMHO the officials from various government departments who are complicit should also be prosecuted and if guilty jailed for a minimum of 5 years plus their assets confiscated (not smacked on the hand by their department) plus even greater punishment should be given to the very senior departmental staff and the minister at the time who conveniently did nothing to monitor what the more junior staff were up to.

Prayuth has just said the right things.....that the owners knew everything was illegal........now they take a hit......

But this being Thailand......eventually, many of these owners will be allowed to stay put......there's just too many big names amongst them:))

I want Banana Man to name and shame all of those in the "past administration"  that have allowed this to happen. It's quite convenient to stand and point, but we would like to know, WHO YOU KNOW,  is responsible. Names and positions PLEASE...!
