Is it worth buying a ticket in the Thai government lottery? Or are other interests more important? Photo: Tanyaluk Sakoot

PHUKET: -- Each week, tens of thousands of people play the Thai government lottery, with many people choosing a lucky number such as a birthday or a license plate number in the hope that it literally brings good fortune.

Many others let fate decide and choose a ticket at random from the one million numbers available.

Yet many people believe the odds of playing the Thai lottery are not favourable and without the old “jackpot” prizes, the maximum major prize to be won with one pair of lucky tickets bought for B80 is limited to B6 million, less taxes.

The Government Lottery Office (GLO) this week is likely to receive a proposal from Tanawat Polwichai, a GLO official who recently headed an investigation into the operations of the lottery, to print more books of tickets.

However, the effect of printing more books of tickets will increase the opportunity for people to win bigger prizes, but will not increase the actual chance of winning.

To this, The Phuket News asks readers, “Is the Thai lottery worth playing?”

In most countries that have a lottery, it is mandated by law that 90%, or greater, of the money spent on the lottery must be returned as prize money.

The Thai national lottery pays back only 60% in prize money. No wonder the various "black-market" lotteries are popular. They pay better odds.

There is a Black market one where you can bet on the closing number of the SET (Thai stock exchange)

Lotteries are a terrible bet. I've never bought a lottery ticket and proud of it. They take advantage of the gullibility of people, especially the poor.

I'll play $2 blackjack in vegas to blow $100, purely for entertainment purposes, but I hate gambling in general. My old man blew enough money gambling to turn me off to it forever.

Lotteries are the worst.

Jeez, 60% ????? Pathetic. But lotteries are fairly innocuous as a form of gambling. I don't recall any stories of people committing crimes to buy lottery tickets which they are addicted to. A couple of tickets twice a month doesn't break the bank and anyone who is desperate enough to think they can win and solve their problems by playing the lottery is soon going to be disillusioned. Buy and enjoy.

I bought my first house with a lottery win. Three wives, taking more than half each time, brought me back to earth.

Finding a good woman is a lottery all in itself............as you discovered.

Lotteries buy you dreams and the right to dream, as every one of us deserve to have

an expectations of what if...... yes, some take gambling way too far, but we're talking

about a small flatter on the lottery and not going crazy in casinos....

Yes and on top of that they tax you. My daughter plays for me. The prize is $50 million this week TAX FREE!! I have heard rumors about how this "lottery" money is spent I wonder if they are true.

I think the most important purpose of a lottery ticket is hope. Hope and something to look forward to every week or month. Its a small price to pay and as we take chances in life on a daily basis this too is one.

Cheers

When we consider that 275000 tickets are allocated to the RTA.........we know where the big money goes......the whole lottery in Thailand is a legal scam!!

Let alone the RTP and all the other spongers........the public is lucky if they  get the last 2 numbers!

It sure doesn't pay in America Pick three = ten x ten x ten = 1000 combinations paying $500 if you win on a $1 ticket. The big lotto's are much worse percentage payouts than that.

Twice a month I buy one single 80 THB lottery ticket to give a possibly existing "higher institution" (who knows ...?) the chance to present me a donation ...
But for this purpose one ticket is enough.
