Phuket officials store 2700 tonnes of tuna seized from IUU fishing boats

PHUKET: More than 2.7 kilotonnes of seized tuna was removed yesterday (Sept 2) from illegal, unreported and unregistered (IUU) fishing boats moored at the Phuket Deep Sea Port at Ao Makham.

The operators of the IUU were arrested seven months ago and the company that owns the ships requested that the Department of Fisheries remove the tuna as it could not afford to store the cargo any longer.

Phuket Fisheries officials brought in workers and a crane truck to remove the monster haul of 2,700 tonnes of tuna from the two fishing boats Mook Andaman 081 and Mook Andaman 028, which were captured by the Royal Thai Navy on January 30 for fishing illegally in Thai waters.

The two vessels, which failed to report to one of Phuket’s six Port-In, Port-Out (PIPO) centres, were initially tracked to about 700 nautical miles from Phuket before their signals were lost, prompting the Royal Thai Navy to send out sea and air patrols.

The two ships were finally located about 75 nautical miles west of Phuket, where they were apprehended and escorted back to the Phuket Deep Sea Port, arriving at 6pm on Jan 30. (See story here.)

What is wrong with these idiots do they not follow the news? The tuna are disappearing from waters world wide. The Japanese could not get their heads together to arrive at a quota catch system so they put it off just keep over fishing. They also want to build a bigger fish market in Tokyo. I really thought the Japanese were smarter than this but apparently the greed vein runs deep in their bodies as well. As we sow so shall we reap.

Unless you can get all nations fisheries to play together then it is in each countries best interest to maximize catch until the resource is exhausted.

Why be the only one to restrict your quota when every other boat is filling their holds?

So, what can they do with 2,700 tons of tuna that have been sitting in storage for approx. 8 months (since January)?

So the full version of the article appears to indicate the tuna has been being kept frozen. But either way, 8 months is a long time to sit stored in fishing boat storage.

Under idiotic fishing rules in the EC if your licence is for shrimp and you catch ten tons of other fish...what do you do?

1. Sell at the market under a licence of another boat

2. Sell the catch to a boat with such a licence.

3. Apply for a interim licence for that catch

No....you dump it...throw it over the side, dead.

The lunatics for sure are in charge.

Suppose i should ask: why have the boats been sitting there since January?

Yes, that is a good question.

The answer to that is, the Thai government should,  no MUST, reimburse the owner(s) of the vessels the 11 plus million they spend keeping the catch frozen. But as the article says, since August 28 the ships' engines have been shutdown and the temperature now has reached 30 Celsius which for sure is not 30 Celsius below ZERO. That is not frozen anymore by a long shot. So now you have a load of tune which can only be used by the Fishmeal industry to make fertilizer.

No not typical Thailand, but typical governments out of control worldwide.

Luckily there are people as smart as you that know really well the statistics of the fishing industry.

I am sure the japanese are behind the illegal fishing in Thailand and they were planning to smuggle those tons or kilotonnes or whatever of tuna secretly to Japan, because no one is eating tuna in Thailand as we all know.

Actually flash frozen tuna stored at temps of -30 can be kept for many years.
