BANGKOK, 4 September 2016 (NNT) - A vice president of the National Legislative Assembly has denied rumors that members of the legislature are planning to join the Senate after the upcoming election.

NLA’s Second Vice President Peerasak Porjit said that members of the legislature recently traveled to meet with residents of Nakhon Sawan province and explain to them the revision of the new draft Constitution.

Mr. Peerasak said that the NLA had informed Nakhon Sawan residents that the revision was needed after the majority of voters approved the referendum question to allow the Senate to take part in the election of the Prime Minister.

However, because of some administrative mistakes, the submission of the revised draft to the Constitutional Court has been taking more time than expected to meet all legal requirements, he said.

Mr. Peerasak added that the NLA’s meeting with the people was also intended to give the legislature the opportunity to hear problems faced by the locals and to collect their opinions to be used in the drafting of organic laws.

Concerning the appointment of 30 new NLA members, Mr. Peerasak said that the legislature needs more people to work on the large number of laws.

He went on to say that no one should pay much attention to the speculation, which suggested that a bigger number of NLA members was intended to prepare for the appointment of 250 senators under the new charter, because that is a matter for the future.

I think we all know what the headline will be tomorrow if they are denying it today...

Yes its a done deal.

For the sake of stability and continuity, in these difficult times, the NLA, totally appointed by one man, will accept the peoples' wish for them to "stay on" after the election, especially in light of the recent (soon to come) national tragedy. I wonder if all of this endless amendment of the constitution, of which actual details are not forthcoming, is exactly this.

I've seen this whole song and dance before. The national tragedy was 9-11. It was time for everyone to come together. The patriot act passed with 90 percent congressional support. Iraq was harboring weapons of mass destruction and getting ready to unleash them on the world. We would have been stupid not to invade. Critics and nay-sayers were disloyal to their country, branded as traitors, and routinely ignored.

If you can't exploit national tragedy and twist it to serve your political ends, then what are you in politics for? Fun times indeed.

Which gives every reason to pay attention.
