Wondering if it was OK or just a pain? We want to go on a bit of a touring holiday for a few days and explore a bit more of Thailand. Problem is we have a 2 year old mutt (bit like a Schitzu) who loves the car and we'd rather not leave him with friends or in a kennel, so would like to take him with us. I can foresee problems like finding accommodation, soi dogs etc, so wondering if it might be too much of a hassle?

TGF and I leaving Pattaya for our new house in Ubon end of year.

We just bought a new car too.

TGF wants a dog, me too,  but she has already mentioned that it could be a problem when we'll go on car trips as planned... :(

Done it many times. You should check airbnb, agoda, booking.com etc...and filter out the hotels that accept pets. Ibis hotel chain accepts pets. We travel with 2 and sometimes three, so with one it should be much easier. It is a struggle sometimes but not impossible if you do your research before hand. Happy travelling!

I have taken my small dog almost everywhere I go. Only once. At a run down Western run place in Rayong was I refused. My gf laughed and said the dog wouldn't have liked it there anyway.

Thanks for the responses, it seems not too many have done it. We'll try a couple of short trips first, just a few days and see how it goes.

My small dog was fine with short runs but anything above 5 kms it could not keep up with the car so I had a small skateboard made and he loves the longer runs now

You should follow Mitt Romney's example and strap the dog to the roof of your car.

I often do that

I live in Bangkok and I take the family and our Golden Retriever Princess and go to Loei where the grand parents stay several times per year. We go to Udon and Trad where I have friends too sometimes and Princess nearly always comes with us. Travelling is no problems at all. I even bring Princess to Treehouse Koh Chang but admittedly, it is getting difficult and a bit unsure if we don't stay with friends. I have no doubt that we find a (often cheaper) resort that takes dogs but how long time will it take?

Thailand is not a dog friendly country at all and beware of that dog friendly hotels often have a weight limit at 20 kilos. Our second Golden Retriever is only 6 months old and she is already 20 kilos... Dogs are banned from national parks and most parks of course...

Staying with friends, perfect. Hotels difficult. Cheaper resorts OK although have to start looking much earlier, some will say no

Sorry to go off topic, but an abiding memory from a holiday years ago is walking through a national park - and being accompanied by a stray (?) dog.

I thought he must be hungry and trying to ingratiate himself, but arriving back at the national park 'centre' and buying him food - he wasn't at all interested.  He just enjoyed the walk!

Travelled over most of Southern Thailand with our dog as far up as Cha Am

We do not bother booking anymore and usually start looking for accommodate around 4PM

NO fussy as long as it is airconned and has hot water and clean, Some places refuse you and

others are quite happy to have your dog stop with you

We have a Bangkaew who is well behaved and let the resorts etc see the dog before agreeing

to us staying and usually find a place within 30 minutes

We have no set schedule and stop and look around in different areas so we never know where we are going

to end up for the night
