When a giant, 5-meter-long python was discovered in Sakon Nakhon yesterday, there was only one possible explanation for villagers — obviously the serpent is related to Phaya Naga, a mythical creature in Buddhist mythology.

The giant snake was discovered at Thawat village in Isaan province. Locals gathered to check out the cool python, which boasts 12 inches of girth. They agreed they’d never seen such a  majestic serpent.

That Dabsipai, 74, who discovered the snake, said that he was going to feed the boars that belong to the villagers. When he got to the stable, where they keep the baby boars, he found this snake lounging in it with the piglets nowhere to be found.

Pathetic isn't it in this day and age.

When denigrating the Thais you should always bear in mind the religious beliefs of the rest of the pathetic world that believes equally daft things.

We're all ignorant in some way or other. I find most rural Thais to be far more in tune with reality/nature than any foreigner I've met here. Superstition is merely a product of our conditioning, and people from all over the world have such beliefs. Perhaps moreso among less formally educated folk, but even we superior know-alls from the west have a great deal to learn from the likes of That Dabsipai, and he's no doubt worthy of far greater respect than any of those who riducule him.

Yep. But still not as bad as the millions of modern highly educated people who still believe in a veritable parthenon of invisible and powerless all-seeing/all-knowing "gods"

And as if that isn't bad enough then go to war with others who have a different imaginary friend.. w@n4ers the lot of them..

Now I understand how they got that referendum result.

When dealing with governments they can pick any number they choose. They just throw in a zinger once in a while to retain some semblance of respectability. Its just an advanced version of the old shell game.

Latest: 'People believe in something there's zero evidence and logic for. People must have their beliefs respected'

In other news: 'Man tells boss in job interview 'I think Elvis is still alive & in the form of an alien; man doesn't get job'

At least the snake is real and when the dinosaurs were roaming around snakes were big hence the naga myth.  l believe long ago some country folk probably unearthed a huge fossil giving rise to the naga legend.  The South American Titanoboa measured over 50 feet long and conceivably weighed as much as a ton(and was not friendly).

But the highly educated christians believe in devils, angels, heaven, hell and a non existent god and there is absolutely zero evidence to support any of their beliefs.

All religion is equally stupid.. it is all based on beliefs without proof.. nailed to a cross and then came back to life :cheesy:

There is nothing in the word "belief" that requires proof.  Also, the Naga is a superstition not something founded in the Buddhist religion.

We we all beleive in things that have no hard evidence to support our belief.  Many beleive that democracy is a form of government that represents the will of the people.  Elton Musk and many high level thinkers beleive we exist only in a simulation.  Others that the universe started with the Big Bang.  That the universe is filled with dark matter.  Some beleive that no life exists in the universe aside from what is on our planet.  At least half of the things we believe today, that we see as based on hard facts, will be seen as laughable 100 years from now.  So if these people want to beleive in a magic snake ... well they are no more delusional than you or I.

So...some stone-age freak digs up some bones and makes up the legend of the Naga and therefore it is okay for every Somchai to believe in this crap!

But when some bronze- age storytellers make up some BS about angels and god, because they were sacred of the sun and Tom, Dick & Harry still believe that...man, are they stupid!

Both is supersticious non- sense and both should not be existing anymore!

Just because you find BS- Thai- believe to be so folkloristic and nice, doesn't make it any better!

There is difference between BELIEVE, based on faith and goodwill and a "believe" in science, where things have been proven right in experiments...

The "belive" in a Naga is NOT equal to a "believe" in the Big Bang- that is, what religious wing- nuts always get wrong!

There is no prove for a Naga- there is evidence for a Big Bang.

The Big Bang maybe proven wrong in the future- the Naga has been proven wrong for ages!

I never said they were delusional because the naga myth could well be what I mentioned above, a legend built on fact, that giant snakes actually existed millions of years ago.

Yes we know about the myth of democracy, and as for Mr.Musk I watched him in an interview the other day where he could not answer people's questions about his own theory and it made him come across as a fraud. As for the Big Bang, many people have serious doubts that a huge universe could grow out of nothing, we know that it is expanding but where does all that dense matter keep coming from?

Every society has its mythologies, but nobody actually believes in these things literally. It's a matter of temporarily suspended disbelief as an outlet for the imagination.

Anyone who plays a computer game is subscribing temporarily to a mythology. And is there anyone here who has never talked to their teddy bear as if it was real? Nobody can spend their whole life in a white lab-coat.

Actually I was comparing the uneducated Thai folk who are in awe anything strange, so their ignorance can be excused to that of well educated western people who believe in nonsense but their ignorance cannot be ignored or excused.
