Meningitis B Vaccine

Featured Replies

As part of my Childs' immunisation program includes the meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4) to protect against four types of meningococcal bacteria (called types A, C, W, and Y) and will be administered when he is 4 years old.

However, recent statistics (From USA) suggest that 65-70% of cases of Meningitis are now related to meningococcal group B bacteria.

In the UK there has been some news and a social media push to encourage parents to vaccinate their children against meningococcal group B bacteria following a number of tragic infant and toddler deaths.

In the UK since September 2015 the MenB vaccine is now offered as part of a routine vaccination schedule. However, this is not so in Thailand.

When I asked our Childs Paediatrician at Bumrungrad about the MenB vaccine I was informed that she cannot provide this as its not on the list of approved vaccinations at Bumrungrad.

I was informed that I should attempt to have my Child immunised against MenB when I return to the UK. However, demand has outstripped supply and on a recent visit I was unable to order the vaccine.

Do any new parents know of any hospitals in Thailand whereby this vaccination may be obtained ?

I am also interested in an intelligent discussion regarding the viability of this Vaccine.

I am not interested in a debate on vaccines in general - that has already occurred in another thread and resulted in bit too much 'copy and paste' of articles from the Anti-vaccine camp.

I am firmly behind safe vaccines and their statistical ability in eradicating disease.... however, I do not know enough of the MenB vaccine programs.

It has nothing to do with Bumrungrad; this vaccine is not yet registered/approved for use in Thailand. The only meningococcal vaccines here are for serogroups A, C, W135 & Y.

Afraid getting it in the West is indeed the only option.

Did you try private doctors/clinics in the UK? they may have it even when the NHS has run out.

Thanks Sheryl...

In the UK I looked at the Boots Online Website - but was informed of a lack of stock.

The Website today is open for MenB vaccination appointments... (for up to 1 month)... I'll have to book my Son in, closer to the time.

It's a private vaccination: However, I do wonder... he has no UK GP records and is not registered there.
