Renew 5 year car and bike licences

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Looking for current info on requirements/process for renewing my current 5 year licence for the next 5 years in Phuket please.

Documentation required?

Medical Certificate required?

Certificate of Residence Address from Immigration?

What tests are to be expected at the DLT?

Time required at DLT for the renewal.

Impact of doing the renewal a few days past validity expiry?

Much appreciated.

If renewing 5 year licenses for both bike and car, here's a tip: get one Address Certificate from Immigration. It should be free. Then photocopy it and both will be accepted by the transport office - one for the bike, one for the car/pick-up.

Do the renewal just after they both expire (next day) and your new licenses will be valid until 5 more birthdays pass - i.e. nearly 6 years. (I renewed mine earlier this year and they don't expire until the middle of 2565 BE.)

No medical certificate.

Tests: watch a video ~1 hr, reaction test easy-peasy, maybe colour-blindness test (wasn't for me).

Time: 8:00 am to about midday.

Forms - explain you need for bike and car so get given 2 copies, let them fill them in for you.

That's my recent experience but, as they abbreviate, YMMV.

Here in Songkhla I went to Haad Yai  Immigration to get the address certificate and they told me I had to go to the DLT first and request a letter stating my intent to extend my (now expired) license.

This is a major hassle because I live two hours a way, am recovering from a broken hip and, on my last trip to immigration, my car engine died...So that in itself is going to be another whole day wasted paper chasing.

I am  not sure if this is some new requirement nationwide of is applicable in Phuket as well. Hopefully for you guys it is not.

Is it really true that the Address Certificate expires the following day?

Think is talking about the licences expiry date. The certificate is usually good for a month.

Oops! I can see how you came to that conclusion default_biggrin.png I should've re-ordered those paragraphs. (I was going to write only the first tip about getting just one Address Certificate, and then kept on writing default_facepalm.gif.)

So, as LiK said, I was referring to the expiry of the driving licenses. I'm not sure how long the address certificates are valid for. At least a couple of weeks I would think.
