DPM Somkid urges state enterprises to be corruption free

BANGKOK, 20 September 2016 (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusipitak has encouraged state enterprises to take action against corruption to help the country move forward.

Speaking at the Zero Tolerance & Clean State Enterprise award ceremony, Dr. Somkid said that state enterprises are important to economic growth. Each year, they generate around 100 billion baht in government revenue.

The Deputy Prime Minister cited the need to strengthen state enterprises and improve their public services, in order to compete with the private sector. However, he also called for transparency, warning that these organizations can be subject to probes on claims of corruption.

Dr. Somkid has called loudly for transparency with state enterprises deals so as to avoid accusations of corruption. This is a good thing.

So it begs the question; is the Thai Army a state enterprise? Seemingly not and is thus relieved of having to take the "transparency" test when it comes to deals done between itself and the PM's family members .

State-owned enterprises are currently supervised by the Prayut government with Prayut as the Chairman of the Super Board for the State Enterprises. Transparency in state-owned enterprises and any action against corruption is Prayut's responsibility. As such Somkid's call for action against corruption amounts to criticism of Prayut's effectiveness.
