The case of the baby that was delivered minus its head will be discussed between the health officials and relatives on Monday.

Compensation is likely to be at the top of the agenda.

The baby was delivered to a 17 year old mother two months premature on Wednesday. The duty delivery doctor pulled it out but its head broke off.

This happened at an unnamed country hospital. The mother and relatives were allegedly then told to see help at Pattalung Hospital in the town. Doctors there found only a head.

The mother was allegedly unaware that he baby was already dead.

The baby has now been sewn back together.

Relatives have refused to take the body for cremation until the matter is sorted out to everyone's satisfaction.

The doctor who allegedly bungled the delivery then tried to hide his tracks is on leave.

Pictures of the baby now in one piece have appeared on Facebook.

Jesus wept this is perhaps the most distasteful writing of an article i've ever seen.

I don't know about what the standard procedures would be for a case such as this. But i would hazard a guess this poor young girl requires counselling, and probably an explanation of sorts before negotiation of blood money (for want of a better expression) ?

SerIously that Is the most InsensItIve revoltIng pIece of reportIng II have seen for many a day.   Some Incompetent "doctor by numbers" bungles a delIvery decapItatIng  the baby  kIllIng It, covers the matter up, sneaks off on leave.... a young mother abandoned.I

Does no one get arrested by the polIce for anythIng In thIs country except makIng face book remarks I?I

Why In the name of all that Is decent was the baby then photographed I(head sown back on) then posted on face book ? I

And all that can be talked about Is compensatIon I?  I just threw up a lIttle In my mouth.

hmmm.....it must have taken some considerable brute strength to pull a baby's head off or if the poor thing was already dead, maybe not? Either way this must be a new low(who would have thought it possible?) in TV reporting.Jeebers wept.

This procedure to deliver baby is a standard procedure in Thailand. And the money compensation is also a standard procedure in Thailand. No one need psychological counselling when the baby comes headless..

I have never heard of a thing like this before Talk about Mal practice

Maybe thats because you are not a doctor.

A 2-month pre-term baby has often not "turned" yet meaning the butt comes out first. If the mum does not cooperate enough by pushing hard enough, which is likely due to her age and the pain she is experiencing, the doctor has to pull the head out with considerable force. They normally do that by putting one finger in the unborn baby's mouth and the other fingers around the neck and then pull the head out.

If something goes wrong it is likely the head will come off.

Keep in mind this procedure was done by a GP who probably has never had a case like this before and given the time and place he was the only doctor there at the moment.

Due to the dilation of 8cm it was not possible to bring the mum to a larger hospital with specialists as the baby was about to be born and would never survive in the ambulance without a doctor present with the right equipment to give oxygen.

If it is malpractice i don't know, but the doctor should have at least informed the patient better.

The baby was two months premature.

We shouldn't make judgement until the doctor, along with all operating assistants are interviewed and a autopsy is completed.

The baby could have had an undeveloped bone structure or some other abnormality.   In this situation the doctor would have a good defense argument. In most cases the doctor would not be held legally liable as there was no negligence.

I suspect they may find that a C-section, (cesarean) procedure should have been done due to a narrow birth canal.

This type of tragedy does unfortunately occur more often than one would think. However, they seldom make the news unless the mother gets a Plaintiff verdict and a multi-million dollar settlement in developed countries.

As a retired doctor, I find it absolutely unbelievable that this doctor has not been immediately removed by the hospital, put under investigation by the medical board(if Thailand has such a thing) . All we hear about is he immediately took a "leave" of absence but no police or official invovlement of any kind. This doctor should actually have his license suspended at the very least...

Terrible story. The fact that he sneaked off on leave makes you think he felt guilty and had something to hide. He obviously did not perform the procedure properly. He certainly didn't look after the Mother.  Bloody Quack!

Did he really sneak off or has he been placed on non-active or kept away from the family and reporters as there is a chance for a criminal investigation? I don't know and i don't trust the article as the general tone is clear.

No excuse for the doctor not informing the mother what had happened, he needs the book thrown at him.

do not understand how a human head can 'break off' .

C'mon,

we are talking about a premature baby been in fluid for 7 months. So the body is still weak and still not have strong neck muscles.

What i can't understand is how that doctor can even let the baby come out the wrong way. Babies Always come out head first. If not they normaly do a c-section.

Barbaric animal. This is not a one of scenario. There are unqualified plastic surgeons all over Thailand. The sweeping reform must happen. Forget cutting school hours. But sewing the head back on is obsurd and terrible thing to do. But Thais will go to all lengths for Baht.

The doctor is to be stripped of his credentials.

I have heard about stories before, where the knowledge of the doctors that delivers babies are poor. Especially in the small hospitals.
Actually not heard a digusting story like this. Just purely unbelievable! Maby they should think hard about where the right knowledge is,
and really inform about that so people can go to a place where they really can trust the doctor making a procedure. Obviously all hospitals

can´t do certain things.

It sounds to me like the head was still inside her at the second hospital, what difference that makes I'm not sure, I would think an ultrasound is standard procedure to find the position of a baby.

Full term babies come out head first, 2 month preterm babies are still with their head up in the womb so the butt comes out first.

C-section is not really an option with 8 cm dilation.

A dreadfully sad event but very sensationally reported - this is how lynch mobs get started IMO.

There are few facts given and certainly not enough to make any judgement.

How about RIP and move on until an investigation finds all the details.

All very sad.

My daughter was 2 months premature, she came out head first with the Dr using forceps, pulling her so hard the bed was getting dragged along, the floor. After reading this and seeing how hard our Dr was pulling, I am so glad ours had a happy outcome. My daughter only had  bruising on her head from the forceps otherwise no other problems. I can only imagine how much force this Dr used.

Possibly enough that it mightn't be necessary for somebody else to discipline since the doctor saw it happen. has to have had some idea what did and none of it sounds like evidence that anybody wasn't in shock. I imagine that even for a mercenary that's no easier to handle than it is for some reading it.

Thank you, I was waiting for a qualified doctor or midwife's opinion on this before passing comment.

To all the Thai-bashing policemen trying to make out that this was somehow normal, I say shame on you.

I was an 'ass end' baby - came out feet first, doctor broke my left shoulder during delivery - and this was in a Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana...........I have a permanent left side lean chicks find sexy because of that - Thanx Doc - Mom didn't appreciate the rough childbirth though and didn't have any more kids for seven years.  C Section??  No way, Mom was strict Catholic and only way out was thru the chute, backwards or otherwise.:sleepy:

If I understand the story correctly, the mother was sent to another hospital where doctors only found the child's head. That would mean that the first doctor was trying to bring out the baby feet first. I thought that was a complete no-no. When there's a breach situation, the doctor either tries to turn the baby or proceeds to a Caesarian. What was this doctor thinking, pulling on the legs/torso of an under-developed baby... ???

Yes, you are right Foexie. I was thinking why they didn't consider c-section. Maybe it costs too much for poor farmer's daughter. Poor thing. They shouldn't have this on the facebook, it is not something to cheer about is it? Insentive  people.

Don't want to prejudge the doctor for tearing off the baby's head.

But why did he leave the poor girl and her parents alone ?

Why did he not accompany them in the ambulance to the other hospital ?

In case you would have read previous comments you would have already seen that a c-section is not an option at that place with 8cm dilation.

There is only 1 GP on shift who is not allowed to operate due to a lawsuit about a decade ago. And who would do the anesthecia? There sure is no specialist anesthesiologist available there. Does the GP break also that rule and does it himself? And does the community hospital even have an operating room or you want him to do it in a normal ward?

The mum had to go to a larger hospital to see specialists but you cannot transport her at that point as also mentioned before.

So there are 2 choices:
1. Do nothing with result the baby dies and possibly the mum also
2. Try to deliver there and then which gives at least a chance of survival for the baby and a good chance for the mum

The GP correctly picked option 2. If you have a better idea then please inform us.

See my post above.
He did the most he could do given his options.
