I just bought a new Asus zenfone 3 (ASUS X008D) and am now trying to connect it to my laptop, also ASUS W10 updated,  for file transfer...Windows Explorer doesn't detect the device and the phone sees the laptop for charging only...

I looked in the laptop device manager and the phone doesn't appear there either...I woulda thought that any necessary drivers would've installed themselves when first connected but apparently not the case...

any similar experiences...suggestions?

In the phone settings, is MTP enabled? I had to do that initially with my zen 2.

what's MTP? please, where is the enable switch located in the settings?

there was a reference to MTP but I didn't know what they were talkin' about...I useta be able to move things from my laptop to my old nokia dumbfone without any special permissions/settings...

and I haven't been able to find a user's manual to download yet...

Please follow methods below for troubleshooting:

I found this at

http://www.asus.com/zentalk/thread-6107-1-1.html

1. Make sure the OS on PC is Windows XP SP3 and above.
2. Settings > Developer options > disable USB debugging.
3. Settings > Storage > upper-right icon > enable Media device (MTP).
4. Install Net Framework to V2 or newer version at http://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=30653
5. Update Windows Media Player to V11 or newer version. Check your version
by launching Windows Media Player > clicking Help > About Windows Media Player
or go to website below: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/190990/en-us
6. Download USB driver on ASUS official support page: http://www.asus.com/support

I hope that helps.

I can't see any of the settings described in this advice on the device.

I got in the W10 device manager and tried to update the driver and got:

'a service installation section in this INF is invalid'

after the driver update failed.

I also found the USB file transfer switch for MTP on the phone and enabled it....

looks like it might be a driver problem but how to fix if W10 cannot update the driver software?

sheesh

well...I got some help from ASUS and now the zenfone appears in the W10 laptop device manager with the drivers installed...but the laptop file explorer still doesn't 'see' it???

sheesh, all I wanted to do was to load some music files onto the phone that with a nokia dumbphone is enabled auto with a simple USB connection...

and what am I gonna do with the snaps taken on the zenfone camera??? maybe take the phone SD card and insert into the laptop to transfer files but what a hassle??!!

maybe my smartphone escapade wasn't such a good idea...yeah, it's a cheap phone and 'ye get what ye pay for'...

I had that problem with a Lenovo phone. I took out the memory card and put it in a reader/writer. I put music on the memory card and put the card back in the phone. The phone saw the music and it played fine. If your phone has a memory card, you can give that a try. It's not difficult.

^yeah...looks I'm gonna hafta go the SD card - removal - and - load route...but I've still got 9 outta 16GB of internal storage available?...but, I guess if nothin' else works...

and then I thought: 'laptop and phone have both got bluetooth...why not use that to transfer files and fergit about USB, SD and etc...'

so I went to set it up (updated the bluetooth driver on the laptop first, not required per the device manager) and got the passcode confirmation and they matched on both devices and clicked 'yes'...

the laptop came back: 'the passcodes do not match'...

jeezuz christ!!!

finally went out and bought a 32GB SD card (Kingston, thb450, Sandisk is much cheaper, thb209?) and put it in the laptop SD slot and loaded up some music...then installed the SD card into the zenfone and OK...very nice sound quality with the headphones...and I was able to set a custom ringtone for the SIM card...Jimi's Red House, the guitar intro 'snaps you out of it'...

the SD card installed in the zenfone and connected via USB is still not detected by the laptop W10 file explorer...so, looks to be a laptop problem and not a zenfone problem...and the laptop is a 2 year old ASUS K550L with W10 with the recent big update...

anyone else with a newly purchased zenfone 3 max, ZC520TL have the same problem with USB connection to PC for file transfer purposes?

there is a feature on the zenfone to transfer files via wifi from the fone to the laptop which I have enabled and will be handy for transfering photos back to the laptop...but what I wanna do is transfer files from the laptop to the phone; music, documents etc...

this USB problem is total BS...best that the ASUS tech support folks get a good whiff of this issue...

look at the barcode sticker on the box...both X008D and ZC520TL are listed for the device...same device as what I been talkin' about...
