This morning I couldn't open Utorrent, so I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall, but now when I try to download I get a message saying "Utorrent is already running in a different location", but I have no idea where. When I check my programs Utorrent isn't even there and the desktop icon has disappeared. Please help.

Strange !

If you can't see the program how did you uninstall it?

Have a look at your system drive usually "C" - "Program files" and see if u Torrent is still there.

Run CCleaner to get rid of any leftovers and try installing again.

You could also try installing a different version of uTorrent and if that works delete that and reinstall your current version again.

Good luck

I still get the "Utorrent is running in a different location" after I uninstalled it. Of course I found it before I could uninstall it.

OK! where was it when you uninstalled it the first time?

Was there an error message when the program didn't open originally?

Strange that it should give "Utorrent is running in a different location" Any new version would just overwrite the old version,  there should be no difference in location.

It was in Programs when I uninstalled it. I found I had to close it in the Task Manager (background processes) before I could re-install it successfully. I also installed the Qbittorrent program as a backup. So, hopefully, it is all sorted.

Good you got it sorted.

For future reference a little program called "Search Everything"  http://www.voidtools.com/  may be useful.

It does a much better job of finding files than the search option that comes with Windows.

You could use it next time you loose a program  :shock1:

I use QBitTorrent anyway, so can't really help.

I have that as well now, but probably because I'm so used to it, I just like the look of uTorrent more.

I wouldn't say that that's a compelling reason to choose a piece of software.

I dropped using UTorrent when they were caught using the client to do some furtive bitcoin mining.

Utorrent became a piece of junk the last few years. Just use QBittorrent or any other open source torrent client. No bloatware, no hidden functions and no backdoors built into the software.

So am I. I switched to QBitTorrent when Utorrent got caught, and I've never changed.

QBittorrent - does it need to set any special settings?

No, you just install it, set your download directory, and set the "Move to... when finished" directory. I use TEMP for the downloads then move the finished ones to the Desktop.

OP switch to qbit, i started using utorrent when it came out and until 2 weeks ago when utorrent couldnt download fast enough i switched to qbit, its amazing and clean.

I couldnt even get fullspeed on my 3bb 100mbps, it would always overload the disk and every answer to this on google said switch to qbit. Now i can download at 15mb/s no problem

100mbs? Every 3bb fibre fttx should have been upgraded for free to 200mbs. 100mbs= max 12MB / 200mbs should be max 24MBs. Check your speed on speedtest or adslthailand.

I've gone back to uTorrent build 2.2.1...

Now no problems.

I'm staying with 3.4.1. Been years since I checked out later versions.  I don't even think about updating.

2.2.1 is a down-date...sorry, down-grade.

(2.2.1 comes before 3.4.1...)

It's much cleaner than the later editions.

I dont understand how qbit can be cleaner at 80mb's ? I mean whats in there to justify this size program for a simple torrent downloader.

What justifies this exaggeration? Chang? It's only 15.7 MB. Or, if your limited for bandwidth, the portable version is 8 MB and 19 installed. Installer: http://filehippo.com/download_qbittorrent/

Couple of quotations to help w/ the understanding of "clean:"

uTorrent:

Has had critical security alerts at Secunia. (though none on this version). Recent versions of µTorrent have been in disfavor at many private sites, supposedly for reporting to the tracker issues. Spigot toolbar offered during install along with home page and search engine changes. Software offers from Open Candy.

so imagine my surprise when a recent Malwarebytes scan turned up 5 registry entries associated with PUPs all related to uTorrent. The fact that these types of surreptitious intrusions can be slipped past even the most vigilant user made me finally decide to look elsewhere.

I dont drink and Im not a smartass know it all like some people. I asked a question because I downloaded qbit from the official homepage and it was 80 megabytes. If you cant answer the question i will excuse your ignorance.
