Lots of liquids are transported in barrels / vessels. During transportation the barrels may be damaged. Pictures show a company repairing battered and dented barrels. The drums are placed in small water filled basin and can therefore easily be rotated.  Subsequently, the vessels are pressurised and the dents can easily be removed with the aid of a hammer.

Halfaboy.  Thanks again for the additional photos.  This thread is now definitely one of the most interesting ever on TV.

Some questions:

  1. I see some diesel powered trucks (similar to the Thai ETAN) but with a factory manufactured body (probably imported from China?).  How much for one do you think?
  2. I wonder what the daily take home wage of the elderly lady breaking up charcoal and bagging it for sale is?
  3. How old is that very young girl holding a baby?

Bulldozer Dawn, thanks for your nice words. I am happy to post all these images. Most of my pictures show daily life in less frequently visited areas. I hope that it will bring others to the idea to also visit the country.

I wish I could answer all you questions. Where as in the cities there are usually some people speaking some English, in this area (the jetty) unfortunately it was only possible to communicate by body language, so the information exchange was limited to none.

Some great photos here.

I can't help but wonder though about all the rubbish on the river bank... do they not see it at all?

Taoism: shit happens

Buddhism: if shit happens, it isn't really shit

Islam: if shit happens, it is the will of Allah

Catholicism: if shit happens, you deserve it

Judaism: why does this shit always happen to us?

Atheism: I don't believe this shit

Unfortunately, it’s not only here, it’s everywhere. People near the river just dump all the rubbish at the banks and after the rainy season everything is gone. It must have a serious impact on the water quality and all the life in it (which is in the end for many of them their livelihood).

Bookkeeping Myanmar style. There is a registration system in place in case cargo as bags, sacks, pieces of wood etc. are unloaded by porters.

Broadly the system works as follows. When i.e. a bag is taken from the ship the porter hands a stick to the ‘administrator’ who sits ashore. At the end of the job the sticks are counted and the books can be made up.

Not sure how this system works in detail as the sticks have a colour code and sometimes more than one stick is handed over. On the second picture you can see that the porter holds a number of sticks in his left hand.

And the rain washes it all out to sea resulting in situations like this and this where Thais are blamed as the 5th biggest culprits on earth for polluting the oceans.

Sad... so lacking in education and awareness of consequences.

Sorry... off-topic I know, but as its such a glaringly obvious part of every single photo I had to make the comment.

Is there not several dams between where halfaboy's photos were taken and the open sea?

Pictures were taken on the banks of the Ayeyarwaddy river near Mandalay. This river flows all the way down into the Indian Ocean / Bay of Bengal. The distance from Mandalay to the Ocean is around 750 km and there are no dams. Note that the origin is near Myitkyina which is over 400 km upstream. So the total amount of waste must be incredible as many places are near this river and there are (almost) no facilities to process waste.

Yes, thank you very much, I most certainly enjoyed it !!

Halfaboy

I love some of the old trucks.  Did you see any evidence of any restorations, a shop doing that kind of work, or someone driving around in a nicely restored vehicle?

I also love to see them and there are many still around. Some of them originate from the second world war era. They are however used to make a daily living and I think there is no money for things as restauration.

These trucks are being driven around until the moment something beaks down and then it will be repaired. This is usually done by the (very creative) drivers and co-drivers themselves. Furthermore things like road assistance are an unknown phenomenon.
