Phuket tour guides, bus drivers demand action for lost jobs

PHUKET: -- A group of local tour guides and a group of local tour bus operators simultaneously submitted letters at Phuket Provincial Hall today demanding that action be taken against illegal tour guides and operations "stealing" their jobs. 

About 50 members of the Andaman Tour Guide Association (Phuket-Phang Nga-Krabi) led by Mr Krit Thepbamrung gathered at Provincial Hall at 9.30am to submit their letter to Phuket Governor Chokchai Dejamornthan.

The letter was handed to Thavornwat Buakaew, acting on behalf of the governor. 

“We have tour guide licenses but we still get arrested for working outside the permitted areas, or for doing jobs in the 'wrong category' while those without licenses get away with it and don’t get arrested,” said Mr Krit.

Sounds like you missed the part about 'without licenses' therefore illegal.

Sounds to me like they're overcharging btw.

Do you know that there dozen of illegal immigrants from Myanmar working in phuket as tour guides, hotel receptionist, hotel staff, waiter, chefs etc.. there alway buses with tour guides companies coming to ur doorstep or emailing you to engage their services for our travelers.

I'm always amused by the guys who are financially able to stay in Thailand precisely because their jobs were protected for their entire career by unions, regulations, licensing requirements, quotas, and other protectionist measures.

 

Yet they don't seem to think it's fair to protect the locals from illegal competition who don't have to worry about things like paying taxes, getting proper licenses, professional training, and other expenses that the legal guys have to factor into their prices.

 

Edit:  And that doesn't even consider the tea money the outsiders dodge by staying under the radar.

Phuket  still has  its problems, just like other parts of the country  that let

corruption exist for too long.  I agree  with impulse,  Expats and long time

stayers, you got your riches  with protection, so why are you griping at these

workers  that are legally employed and getting affected by criminals or mafia or

otherwise illegal people. Quit sniffing the wacky weed  and think before you

type. Remember TXN, having money does not mean that you are  a good and

honest person.

Was competition allowed in the West? Yes. Was it encouraged? Yes.

 

In Phuket, the natural business plan is to form cartels, associations, a monopoly.....call it what you will.

These organizations are usually run by the people who, if they aren't mafia, they certainly act like it when defending their "territory".

 

This has nothing to do with worker practices in the West and everything to do with that typical sense of self-entitlement that infects this island. And of course, when things take a dive for any of these cartels, associations and monopolies, that same sense of self-entitlement causes them to go squealing, cap in hand to the government to fix the problem fairly (in their favour), because to these disgruntled people, that's why there is a government.

Strangely, you've just described the genesis of hundreds, if not thousands, of organizations in the West formed for the specific purpose of protecting income streams from interlopers.  Some of them legal, a lot of them illegal, and many started out very illegal but used enough monetary and political clout to become enshrined in the laws.

 

It's not so different.

No wonder when I was doing island hopping in phuket and the tour guide told us that they will be bringing us to monkey beach.. now den I know those monkey were not original from there..
