BANGKOK: -- The immigration department has announced a crackdown on illegal activities at tourist sites throughout Thailand as the tourist season gets into full swing ahead of the New Year.

The department said they will be particularly looking out for foreign gangs preying on tourists.

Chuchat Tareechat said that in Bangkok his department would be focusing their attention on Khao Sarn road, the Bang Rak area, Sukhumvit Road and Soi Nana, reports Naewna.

Outside the capital they will target activities in Phuket, Chonburi, Chiang Mai, Surat Thani and Songkhla.

Their attention will concentrate on Pattaya, Samui, Hua Hin, Doi Suthep and Phu Kradung in Loei province.

They will be looking for tips, conducting searches and hopefully making arrests.

Of particular interest will be international law breaking, criminal activity, sex offences and human trafficking in children.

Members of the public with information about law breaking can call the department on 1178 or use their ID of INVEST_IMM on the Line application 24 hours a day.

When I read the title, I was afraid, just before 'high season' many resorts, hotels and restaurants in touristic places would be closed down for 'employing' (abusing of) scores of foreigners, a lot of young Farangs among them, without work permit (and no social nor healthcare protection!).

But the following text 'reassured' me, it is about 'foreign gangs preying on tourists', not the Thais, and as most of the places I thought of are owned by, or protected by, Thai 'influential people', it seems we will be able to further have our food and drinks as usually...

Would hypocrisy be a main component of the so-famous 'Thainess'? One could easily make such a conclusion, IMO...

How about cracking down on tuk-tuk mafias, jet ski operators, gem scammers, etc, etc?  Nope, crackdown will be on the foreigners because . . . yippee!!!!  New Years money!!!!

If past "Crackdowns" are anything to go by, you can be sure the RPT will arrest a few foreigners for trifling offences. But, it will be a case of SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT, as they (RTP) will be unable to see the wood for the trees - due to "Baht" blindness.

What is the percentage of crime, in Thailand, perpetrated by foreigners ?  Doubtful it makes up a significant part of overall crime.  It sounds like officers are looking for a excuse to get out of the office.  What sort of special powers do immigration officers have over the RTP ?  Are they better paid and harder to bribe ?  This country has an interesting way of tripping over itself.

This is a good move--a sort of protecting the tourists to gain more trust and confidence. Thanks!

Ahem, it's not a move to do something, it's an announcement only...

There are many obstacles to overcome and preparations to be made between an intended action and it's implementation: first of all get rid of bad spirits, have a meeting about strategy and then have a meeting about strategy, arrange photo ops, prepare a list of excuses beforehand, tell the intended target many times and many days in advance about the crackdown so there will be a positive image to market, ask the PM to have article 44 ready just in case...

Good to know that the illegal activities will be de-activated as of now.........I have been sooo.... worried about these illegal activities by foreign gangs targeting innocent tourists to the point I was not going anywhere......

What about Traffic?
Will the Police be out slowing down the Buses and doing Brake Tests?

Now that is just being plain silly....

Police out? It's only halfway through the month!

Whew! That's a relief. We need to put those foreign crooks out of business, since they are taking work away from Thais.

I thought they might start looking for the Thai Jet Ski operators preying on tourists. Would hate to put those honest domestic honorable businessmen put out of business.

I'd love to read a story where the people in power say they will try to tackle a  problem that is a problem because of their ineptness.

How about going after 'all' criminals who pray on tourists. Jet ski operators, rogue taxi drivers, etc. Why is it always about clamping down on a problem that always makes someone else look like the bad guy and make them look like the good guys.

If you wanna be the good guy, be the good guy. No more condescending and patronising hyperbole.

What about a crack down on immigrations currupt ways of bribes, falsifying and making regulations and requesting fines and such. I thought this behavior would have stopped after the erawan incident but its still going on.

Good going guys. More ฿ for the holidays.

Most people assume they're targeting Farang gangs. I think you might find they're looking at countries closer to here, such as Cambodians and Burmese who blend in better.

I guess your missing the point that we are talking they are immigration police.. their jurisdiction is.... foreigners. Those things you mention are not policed by them but by the normal police.
