The controversial Dhammakaya Temple and its fugitive “honorary abbot” Phra Dhammachayo will almost certainly remain in the spotlight for another year in 2017.

While senior officials including Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha have said the case will be prosecuted according to the law, authorities have not been able to search the vast temple and apprehend the monk.

Meanwhile, charges continue to pile up against the temple in Pathum Thani’s Klong Luang district and its supporters involved in the case.

why dont they just shut it down, block all the entrances and only allow people to leave, if anyone tries to break through or cause problems arrest them. This is absolute bullsh*t, they allow people to still enter and are doing bugger all about the criminal inside, really shows just how pathetic thai justice is as well as how cowardly the police really are.

This witch hunt is being conducted for selfish reasons, but selfishness also prevents it from being followed through on, so.... ?

Anyway, being cynical of Thai authorities will always lead you to the truth. It is just painful because it is so obvious, while western authority figures have learned to hide it better.

It's a witch hunt. There are many Thai fugitives at large who have committed far more egregious crimes than receiving laundered money to whom the attentions of thousands of security officers could be better turned (treason, overthrowing the democratic system with the King as head of state, sabotaging elections, anyone? Not to mention murder, human trafficking, torture, and worse... ).

An important faction backing the junta are Buddha Issara's religious conservatives, and they have long been wanting to take aim at this sect. They have found common cause with Prayuth's authoritarian clique who are out to rout every institution that carries a reddish tint.

You shouldn't be so credulous of the mainstream Thai media that has long reported sympathetically to the military viewpoint for various reasons--especially nowadays.

I can make these assertions because the larger pattern of this govt's behavior indicates that they have no interest in justice. There had scarcely been a more politically-driven administration than this one.

Thammachaiyo may be corrupt, and he may be perverting Buddhism to his own ends. He probably is, but that doesn't change the fact that this is still totally a witch hunt.

A witch hunt, in common terms, is a campaigne against a person holding unpopular believes.... in this arena, the unpopular beliefs seem legion... but never mind that.

With thousands of cops.... a few tasked at bringing high profile fugitives to justice, seems right to me, as it sends a message to others... IE... none are above the law

so... that said, I believe this "witch hunt" is very appropriate, in a community that takes its cues from such people

cut the head of the snake, mate... and the body will follow.

This may seem a fantasy, but it's a damn good place to start... take out a few of the "untouchables" and maybe the lessor villains will rethink their position.... alternatively, drop the case, and prove to the lessor villains, that they can act with impunity

the later, seems a rather stupid place to put your law enforcement tool into.... better to have not begun a process that makes a laughing stock of the judicial system, don't you think? so now started, follow thru... or hand in your badge.

besides which, why should he get a free pass?

That said... the others you mention, need persecuting with equal or more zeal.

Somehow I am missing your point.

My point is that we can still classify it as a witch hunt even if the one being hunted is, in fact, a witch. It's a large, unnecessary show of force and an engendering of popular, righteous fury against an individual who is seen to be corrupting society all for political purposes.

Fascism thrives on this s**t. I trust you're familiar with 1984? Thaksin used to be the witch, but he has been far too quiet for too long, and there were beginning to be rumblings of discontent even among the faithful, so a new one had to be found.

After this witch, there will be another, and another. So we should take a step back and ask ourselvees if we really believe the amount of state resources being thrown down the well into this farce are being spent wisely and productively, or if, in fact, we're simply coping with our current level of powerlessness by participating in the latest incarnation of the 2-minute hate.

witch hunt, how ridiculous can you get. For many years in Thailand anyone with wealth and power have avoided any corruption charges simply because of who they are, in this case the corrupt monk is hiding behind his religion and followers as well, making him an even bigger target that needs to be brought to justice. This is no witch hunt, it is a matter of doing the right thing with billions of baht involved, illegal building, stolen govt land and the list goes on, all while the one involved is supposed to enshrine buddhas purist teachings. The man is a joke, he is a criminal of the highest echelon  and needs to be brought to justice so that the people can see that being so important does not mean you are above the law, the same applies to yl and her brother plus all the rest of the scum bags we have here. For too long the authorities have allowed these low lives to do as they please simply because of their position in society, time to make them pay the piper and be dragged back down to the level they deserve.

Good, it will give us many more months of entertainment reading the excuses and backtracking on why no progress has been made.

Score so far is Dhammachayo 10 zip
