Dhanin Chearavanont, left, chairman of Charoen Pokphand Group, is interviewed by Nation Multimedia Group’s digital journalist Suthichai Yoon.

BANGKOK: -- THE government needs to strategically invest in supporting an electric vehicle industry if it wants to maintain the country’s status as the region’s automotive hub and prevent international automotive companies moving their plants to other countries, said Dhanin Chearavanont, chairman of Charoen Pokphand Group (CP).

Dhanin said that Thailand should do the same for a high-speed train system and also import specific talent from around the world to enhance the development of innovative industries, such as the railway and automobile sectors, as well as robotics.

He said that a high-speed train network would help modernise Thailand similar to what King Rama V did with the creation of the railway system during his reign.

Government is rarely a good answer to any problem other than making it more costly and complicated.  Should Thailand become rational again and open up to the outside world, the market will take care of itself without government "help" or rather control.  Are the Japanese going to increase their investments in Thailand over its neighbors ?  Would not be wise on their part now.  Are there any shops in Thailand doing EV conversions ?  Not a big market, but good for building skills.

A Thai friend once said "Thai is government good.  It is where stupid people can find a job"

Not something CP would invest on its own.

From the man:

- Whose group owns True who have no respect whatever for fair play, for their customers and for ethics.

- Whose senior executives were convicted of massive insider trading and he refuses to take any action and  thinks it's just a joke.

I wished mr CP became a minister in Thailand..Only him understands exactly what is needed. This man has a great vision, no wonder he became so rich.

The coup has lay waste to 3 years of planning for electric car and the junta PM is no visionary to see the big potential and economic opportunities. Indonesia is years ahead in their electric car development since 2015 and will roll out their national electrical car  soon. Malaysia had their electrical roadmapsince 2011. And in Lalaland, we just inviting interested Organisations to apply. How many more years will this junta governments cause Thailand to lose economically before they destroy the country.

This whole solar and EV market is going to be big very soon. The same way silicone valley took off. Either get on the bandwagon or be left in the dust. I don't understand why Thailand can't compete in this market. Just think of the solar possibles here for solar energy available. But and a big but you need government buy in to make it possible.

If I was younger it would a good time to invest. As someone who missed out on MS apple google don't let this new wave past you by.

Because they can't speak english, don't have good technicians/engineers...Huawei buys ALL the best engineers from the world, that's how you do it...

If you could choose between thailand and china to start a huge factory would you have to think which one to choose?

Bangkok will be perfect for electric cars , you have all the big bundles of cables on all the poles with electric , just pay one of the " Boys " to climb up there and connect a cable so you can recharge your EV on the street in front of your shop :smile::smile:

The same guys pushing this I think are also "pushing" push bikes in a 40 C climate........

Where are the Solar powered roller skates ?

OK.....yes I am only joking.......a little.........

If you choose China, be sure to export those cars through Malaysia unassembled, then have them assembled before entering Thailand to avoid high customs taxes.

Or, just don't bother doing business with Thailand. It's just not worth the bother.

Sadly I rather suspect that's what is/will happen.

Well the first thing they have to do is make them legal on the roads in Thailand.

I wanted to buy and electric car a couple of years ago until I found out they can not be insured and are illegal on Thai Roads. Surprising in that a motor cycle are, and I saw a few electric cars driving around to. But then I also saw a lot of people driving around without a Helmets as well, which doesn't make it legal.

Yeah! It reminds me of Saudi Arabia in the 70's. Build a New Road and a few weeks later dig it up to put water and sewer pipes in.

That reminds me of the Thai as well. every new road has cuts from making pipelines under them after it was made.

And those cuts always break open after a few months so they have to repair it which they don't do well so the road is higher at that place
