Does the Thai government social security / health insurance cover existing conditions?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have the local government social security / health insurance through my job, but I have never used it yet. I have a very comperehensive international health insurance from back home that I get thanks to the job of a family member. However, this coverage is only applicable until a certain age, which means that in a year I will be no longer covered.

Does the Thai social security cover drugs needed for an existing condition? I lost one testicle for cancer when I was younger, and therefore need regular testosterone injections (Nebido 1000mg/4ml, every 8 weeks). This drug is available in Thailand, but pretty expensive costing 6000 baht per injection. If I would go to the hospital specified in my local health insurance and explain the condition, would testosterone be available for free for me through the hospital?

I am thinking they could possibly cover a cheaper alternative (e.g. testosterone enanthate, that must be injected every 14 days or so) but not sure about Nebido, which is more convenient with the longer injection interval, but also a lot more expensive.
