BANGKOK: -- A school bus driver is dead and twelve students were injured after an overtaking bus collided with the trailer of an 18 wheel truck.

The footage was caught on the dash cam of a following vehicle that was not involved.

Police and medics in Kanchanaburi rushed the scene of the accident on the Ban Kao to Kanchanaburi Road. They found the  school bus with the driver's side smashed in off the road on the left.

A dozen students had head, leg and arm injuries and were taken to two area hospitals. Parents and relatives who heard of the  accident flocked to the hospitals on Monday evening, reports Manager Online.

The driver of the school bus - a woman aged about 50 called Ladda Leuangpramuan - was taken to hospital with severe injuries. Despite doctor's efforts she died later from her injuries.

All the children were reportedly out of danger.

The driver of the 18 wheeler - Thammarat Sopha, 34 - is helping police with their enquiries.

Kanchanaburi police said that the children were on their way home to Ban Kao from several schools in the area.

for <deleted!> sake yet another serious bus crash, when is this madness going to end, something drastic needs to be done

Thailand, the hub of serious bus accidents in the world......by a country mile

surely someone is going to waken up to this carnage and start getting serious

Limit all buses and mini vans to a strict 45kmph speed limit until a long lasting solution has been found and anyone caught going over 45kmph or committing any other moving traffic violation gets a mandatory month in jail and licence revoked for a year forcing them to take the test again to get it back. and a hefty fine of at least 20kbaht

and he was overtaking on a single then double yellow, not to mention the weather conditions

also worth noting that without the dashcam and social media we would have heard nothing about this accident

why is a vehicle with passengers passing on a solid line in wet weather?

Have no sympathy for the driver. Could have been much worse if hit head on...

Many Thais just don't follow driving rules or road conditions. Like 3 seconds in her life would have made a difference. Now she can think about it from now until reincarnation as a soi dog....

I think most Drivers / Riders  on the roads here,   are to stupid to operate a motor vehicle  of any kind and should only be allowed to use Flip Flops as a mode of transport.

maybe then,    the innocent will  be safe.

The driver in front of the bus seemed to have seen the terrible coming.

He sharply goes to the curbside hoping it might work out.

It didn't.

It looks like the bus is almost completely back on its own side of the yellow lines at the point of impact while the truck trailer was on the wrong side of the yellow lines. Both the small bus being overtaken by the large bus and the oncoming small sedan ahead of the truck/trailer pull over on to their respective hard shoulders to make way. Admittedly the big bus pulled an illegal overtake on a hill but I wonder if the truck driver bottled out after he had already committed to overtake the small sedan in front of him and forgot that he was about 30' longer than his regular 10-wheeler.

Well now the big General can also see what happens every day over and over again....Busdrivers who CAN'T drive and have NO responsability.

Another day another big accident, welcome to Thailand....keep on smiling folks.

Bus clearly in the wrong, but how far over was the truck? He also seems to have been passing something.

At the time of impact the bus was actually back in his lane, only thanks the vehicle he was overtaking moving over.

The oncoming lorry looks like it lost the back end.

Some times 2 idiots meet on the road and this is the result.

Based on the fact that last weeks major death toll with a public van only thus far has prompted lots of empty rhetoric. Which, given time will all evaporate.

I presume it will take a bus accident with a similar proportionate magnitude of fatalities. Then the record will replay itself all over again. No one at the top really cares as:

  • life is cheap
  • they believe they go to a better place after fattening the coffers and lifestyles of the temples/monks
  • and anything that costs more money than the penny pinching current expenditures in overhead and operating costs to save one baht

changes. But remember if you never ever learn what common sense means in your youth, how can you apply it to help affect change.

What does amaze me is that the parents never seemed to express any alarm over this kind of behavior.

Cultural differences playing out every minute of every day.

So horribly sad, senseless and so much of this could be avoided.

looks like the truck had swerved out of the way of the bus but there wasnt enough room or time for the trailer to follow the swerve.

They need a NTSB and stricter drivers examinations, as well as, no notice Check Rides by undercover Examiners !,

Firstly what they need is a deterrent so severe that it will make it not worth the risk.

Secondly they need to make sure that there is a very high chance of being caught (see below)

Thirdly they need to make sure that drivers of passenger vehicles are highly trained

Since the normal police don't have any interest in law enforcement and the motorway police don't seem to bother much either, perhaps the setting up of a (plain clothes) special highly motivated and trained unit that only deals with public transport (buses) and HGV vehicles.

I honestly don't know what the answer is, I have been driving on Thai roads for almost 14 years and covered well over 100,000km and some of the stuff I have seen particularly involving buses - minivans and HGV vehicles is horrendous and insane mixed in with a very large dose of extreme stupidity

The interesting thing that I mentioned earlier is the recent widespread use of dashcams and the distribution of footage via social media

I believe the truck was doing the same thing or had just moved out to take a peek and suddenly saw the bus and swerved back in but the trailer swung out further as it would with such a maneuver and wham, the truck was likely getting a lot of spray from the vehicle in front and also driving too close

Looks like the oncoming truck and trailer also realised what was about to happen and braked sharply sending the trailer into a jacknife, it was the jacknifing trailer that hit the front of the bus, maybe if the truck driver had just kept his nerve and aimed for the gap without standing on the brakes they might have both made it.

Both truck and bus should not have been overtaking there though.
