The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has estimated about 4.25 million people born in Myanmar now live abroad, most of them in Thailand and Malaysia, based on the 2014 census and projected immigration rates from censuses since 1983, according to The Irrawaddy Online report on Wednesday.

 

According to the UNFPA report leased on Wednesday, the majority of Burmese living abroad, half from border areas such as Mawlamyine in Mon state and Hpa-an in Karen state and most now live in Thailand and Malaysia.

 

International emigrants are predominantly from young and male with 156.3 male emigrants per 100 female emigrants and three quarters of recent Burmeswe immigrants to Thailand aged 15 to 34.

 

International immigration is fuelled by employment opportunities and higher earnings abroad, said the report.
