I am 66 years old, receiving a UK pension and intending to retire in Thailand. I understand i have to show a combination of pension and income to equal 800,00 baht. I have a 26 year old english wife who is coming with me. She won't work initially while we are settling in but may want to work after a year or two. What visa will she need to live here with me in Thailand?

I think the best thing for both of you to do is to apply at an honorary Thai consulate in the UK for a multiple-entry non-immigrant visa O. Purpose of visit in your case would be “to investigate retirement possibility”, in the case of your wife “to live with my husband in Thailand”

Once in Thailand, you arrange for your bank account and transfer the money to it. The minimum 800k Baht must be in the Thai account at least 3 months prior to your application for extension. As you receive permission to stay 90 days when you first enter Thailand, it means that you both have to do a border run before the 90 days are up in order to receive a new 90-day permission to stay.

When the money has been in the bank for 3 months, you get a letter from the bank to confirm the balance, go to the immigration office, you apply for an annual extension of stay for retirement, your wife applies for the same extension but as your dependent.

Sounds a lot easier than I thought, thanks for the prompt reply!

There would be more convoluted routes, but I gave you what I think is the easiest and what I would do in your situation.
