BANGKOK: -- Super Poll Research Centre polled the opinions of 1,266 people of different occupations and professions across the country during January 10-21.

The survey shows the following results: 67.1 percent are confident with the prime minister that he will be able to bring about national reconciliation; 68.91 percent agree politicians are insincere toward reconciliation and 71.8 percent believe political conflict will exacerbate if there is no reconciliation.

Please define national reconciliation. Does it happen to coincide with one Party rule?

Not one party no, rather one (small) section of society which alone chooses who rules.

There is no need for a party, or indeed any political activity beyond this small circle.

They can publish polls like this, secure in the knowledge that no one dares challenge them, that would be to undermine "national reconciliation " and would lead to rigorous "attitude adjustment ".

It's a concept of which George Orwell would be proud, and where he alive today would give him plenty of scope for a novel.

Yes, I am certain that "reconciliation" means that the red-shirts/Phrai must agree to be ruled by the good people/amart, as it was back in the good old days..

For true reconciliation, the 'powers that be' would first have to acknowledge all of their crimes, which would have to be adjudicated, and then maybe the country could move forward.

However, that will never happen.

Another "pull it out of my a$$" poll or one where they only polled the coup backers.

What a joke. This "Govt" becomes more ridiculous every day.

By the time elections come around it will have been the same length of time (hopefully) as the Trump presidency, yet with much less achieved.

This smacks of TAT or DOT statistics, throw a number up there and do whatever necessary to substantiate it. Imagine being a Thai and having a soldier take your photo and record you driving license and then ask if you like the little general, etc. The only surprising thing about his statistics is that the approval was less than 100 percent.

These polls surely cannot be carried out by neutral organisations.

Yeah, "Super Poll Research Centre" sounds more than a little dodgy. I googled the name (with 'centre' and 'center'), and the only references that came up were to this article. Looks like fake news may have washed ashore in Thailand...

Reconciliation was a Thaksin buzz word that in essence meant nothing at all except his own amnesty

What Thailand needs is -

- A fair and Working Justice System that applies equally to all

- Law Enforcement without Prejudice, Corruption free and applies Equally to all

- Human Rights and freedoms that apply equally to all

- Wealthy Criminals cannot buy their way out of Jail

- Stiff enforced penalties for those in Public office that commit crimes and corrupt

If you can deliver that you will provide Reconciliation to all of the people

In the article I miss the sentence: 3 out of the 4 people being asked...

During the "Shut down Bangkok" protests I asked some of my neighbors wearing "we want democracy" T-shirts what is democracy? The answer was: Thaksin out!

I will not go that far to ask them what  reconciliation means so nobody will lose face.

"They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just round the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it."

George Orwell, 1984.

Not hard to understand why the chap reading this book in public was carted away.

Commendable objectives but not nearly sufficient. The reality that Thailand is one of the most unequal societies on earth needs to be addressed. As the Economist pointed out this week, the appalling educational system needs to be overhauled - keeping the North Korean style mumbo jumbo to a minimum and removing the current lies from the curriculum and more importantly improving standards for the rural majority. The feudal, corporate and military unelected elites not to mention their "useful idiots" and hangers on, much of the Sino Thai urban middle class, need to understand governments cannot be overturned other than through a fairly conducted general election under a properly democratic constitution.Any criminal offences whether committed by civilian politicians or military leaders (including taking power through force of arms) cannot be pardoned ex post facto. Those accused of such offences need to be made accountable in a court of law, free from "packed" justice.

Reconciliation, i like the junta..but nobody has ever been able to bring it.. the junta won't either.

Only if there is no money to be made in politics (corruption) then both sides won't spread the hate to get in power. This won't happen. I can only hope that street protests are not allowed anymore or held in places where they don't paralyze a city. It just goes on and on.

Yes and last but by no means least
the military has to stay in its barracks unless its called upon by the democratically elected leader of the country (or alien invasion )

Khun Prayuth Chan o Cha is the best thing that has happened to Thailand in a long time.

He has brought stability and security to Thailand which was non existent before.

The country is moving forward to ensure growth and sustainability.

However there are some farangs who just don't understand Thai politics and continue to complain about the general and his achievements. Maybe those who don't agree with the government should consider leaving, or did they like Thailands lawlessness and instability and constant protests as before.

I as most are quite happy with the military in power, it sure beats any of the other choices.

Well, 8 hours and 25 posts before the familiar refrain of " if you don't like it you should leave" rears it's head; not bad I suppose.

Two points perhaps need to be made.

1. You don't speak for all the farangs living here - simply following this forum should tell you that. We're still able to express our opinions.

2. You don't speak for the Thai electorate. The fact that they are not permitted to express any opposition to the junta, let alone vote on the matter ( given the electoral record over the last 20 years or so), rather suggests that they don't support the Junta.
