BANGKOK: -- ALTHOUGH a new law is in effect for local administrators to charge a maximum of Bt350 per household per month for garbage collection and disposal, many residents do not have to pay the increased fee yet.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority and other municipalities have said they needed time to study the issue before they could implement the new payment plan, which increases garbage collection fees from the current Bt20 a month per household for up to 20 litres of trash per day.

Thailand has been struggling to manage 23 million tonnes of garbage a year and has invested tens of billions of baht in garbage management. Bangkok alone produces 10,000 tonnes of garbage a day.

We pay 40 baht a month now for very poor service. Oh and the 1000 baht New Year tip for the five names they give us.

They are supposed to come 2 times a week but more often than not it is once a week. Sometimes they even miss 2 collections.

I call and complain nearly every month. Maybe if the rate increases, some Thais will complain about the service too.

I hope we won't have to pay 700 baht a month in the future.

In Chiangmai we can only use marked black bags supplied by the local authority which we pay for individually. So you pay for what you use, sensible solution I think.

Not really.. many people would not want to pay and fly tip (new word i learned from other topics)

They should just increase it for everyone and put it on the electricity bill so people can't avoid paying. Though 350 a household is too much. We pay 300 here and get people to keep the park in the village in shape.. sweep the streets and other things.

Unfortunately you don't indicate where your 'rip-off' occurs. Here in Muang Phichit, we pay B20 per month and the garbage truck picks up twice a week and every home has a 55 gallon blue plastic drum to keep the garbage from any dogs etc. There is virtually no garbage along any roads in this district.

Unfortunately that cannot be said for some areas in Pathum Thani where I used to live, roadside garbage dumps are very common.

What i don't get is that it should be much more expensive to manage trash outside of BKK because logic says that the scale of things in BKK is much greater so there should be economy of scale. Seems that the 350 is quite high.. should be 200 or so

We pay about 30 Baht a month for all village charges, garbage collection twice a week from our large blue "bin".

Ban Pathum / Chiang Rak area northern BKK.

We shall see what the increase is, if any.

Crossy,

We also live in a burb of BKK.. Bangyai area (near Westgate). We pay 300bt a month but its an all inclusive fee they also maintain the rest of the village. I doubt our chargews will go up because its not the BMA that does the collecting but our own village cleaners (who then dispose of it maybe using the BMA)

Problem here is that there are still quite a few people refusing to pay the charges and in a way make it more expensive for those who do pay. The communal swimming pool  lost its maintenance because of shortage of funds. Would not have been a problem if everyone paid.. seems that is always the problem here getting people to pay. If everyone does it its cheaper for all.

Yeah Robblok I know what you mean.

We're in a village village, not a moo baan so no communal spaces apart from the roads to manage (I remember the issues with payments when we had a condo).

Many of the small homes pool their resources and pay for one bin to be collected, seems to work ok and the authorities don't seem to mind. There doesn't seem to be much burning of rubbish either (although it does happen).

Oddly enough we don't have a fly-tipping problem although you don't have to drive far to see it in action, I really have no idea why.

Perhaps we're in a parallel universe.

The "village" where I live in Bangkok has yet to establish a juristic entity to look after garbage, security etc. even though it was completed 5 years ago. The developer still pays. But I am very sure that there are some households which would refuse to pay into the central "community charge". So as long as there is no juristic person and the developer continues to pay, we are happy. Just pay 20 Baht a month directly to the garbage collectors.

BTW how can you force recalicitrant home owners to pay their share of the community charge.

Yea that is the big problem.. i would say refuse their cars entry to the village or something like that. It is just unfair to those who do pay. That is why adding the garbage fees to the electric are genius.

There are plenty brand new houses which are disconnected from electricity. They bought those houses not to live in, just for investment.

I have several of them near. They do nothing at all to maintain them and will sell it one day i guess.

Better put a tax on plasticpellets which are used for plastic bags and products. It's all plastic...

I live in a small rural village in the hills where there is no garbage pickup. Instead of burning the garbage in my backyard, as do most of my neighbors, I just take it back to the local 7/11 from where most of the garbage originates. The trick is to take it in the morning when the garbage cans are still empty.

Thai waste management is privatised, landfill is expensive, circa 30% of waste is recycled, basically it is costing the government. In order to significantly increase recycling the cost has to be pushed onto the public in order to create incentive to further recycle. plus the volume has doubled over the last 6 years, predicted increase is circa 500k tonnes p.a.
