Many expats living in Thailand love to sit down with a cup of coffee and do the crossword.

But have you ever thought of entering a competition where you could win money by doing just that?

Next weekend February 4th/5th in Bangkok sees the annual Thailand Crossword Puzzle Open championships that take place in The Mall shopping center in Lat Prao Road, Bangkapi. The top prize is 25,000 baht.

The competition is now in its eighth year and is organized by the Thailand Crossword Game Association and sponsored by the English language institute ECC that has branches throughout the kingdom.

The competition is open to all comers. There will be three qualifying rounds where competitors have 30 minutes to try and complete two separate puzzles. Two of these qualifying rounds are held about 9.30 am and then early afternoon on Saturday. The final qualifying round is on Sunday morning.

After this the top five contestants are selected who will appear on stage in a grand final using giant puzzle boards and marker pens. The final puzzle always has a theme.

Last year(in our picture) the bonus point words all contained the letters ECC after the sponsors.
