rooster59
Campaigners call for sacking of senior official involved in paintings theft at Japan hotel By THE SUNDAY NATION POLITICAL campaigners yesterday demanded the government punish and sack a senior official caught stealing paintings from a Japanese hotel – or face a lawsuit for failing in their duty. The Association to Protect the Thai Constitution (APTC) released a statement calling on the Office of the Civil Service Commission (OCSC) and Commerce Ministry to take action against Suphat Saquandeekul, deputy director-general of Intellectual Property Department. It said Suphat, 60, had committed a “shameful” crime and humiliated the reputation of the Thai government around the world. BigBadGeordie
"Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said on Friday that the Commerce Ministry would set up a committee to investigate the case. He said that, according to OCSC standards, theft was not a serious crime, but if the action affected the country’s reputation, it could be considered so." This says it all, and they wonder why there is an issue with theft/graft/corruption in this country. After all it's not really a "serious" crime. vadid
The biggest crime he was guilty of was forgetfulness, he forgot he was not in Thailand where he would have gotten away with it, unfortunately for him he was in Japan.
mikebell
The problem of Thailand in a nutshell: crime goes unpunished; there is no fear so corruption can flourish.

chainarong
Anywhere decent there would be no need for Campaigners to lodge complaints, dismissal would be automatic however it is Thailand , where this morning I read a list of the 20 countries not to visit and Thailand came in at 10 and this is one of the reasons why. Corrupted to the hilt.
mtls2005
Still not named by the local "authorities". Wagons circled. Can't see them taking any steps on this one as it would acknowledge that a so-called "good person" might have done something "bad". Without the security videotape I imagine they would have found a patsy to take the fall.

Yes we want to keep this "in house" and out of the social media who will have a field day with this. Its out in the open now finally at first we had trouble even getting the name of the heinous perpetrator.

ttthailand
Not really his fault as he is programmed to understand that he is above the law. Day after day doing as he pleases and everyone kissing up and catering to his every wish, how could he not think he can do as he wants. Speaking with Thai friends it seems that the onus is on him being caught and not on the stealing. He's embarrassed Thais and this seems to be the crime in their eyes. Sad really. The crime is he stole. He's in a position where he's supposed to be setting examples. "It ain't a crime if you don't get caught and embarrasses your thin skinned compatriots". Fookhaht
Put him in a potato sack with all the Rolls Royce "giftees," add a few cement blocks, and dump them in the Gulf of Thailand. Nevertheless, a very slight dent in government-big business corruption in LOS. Alas, remembering that: 1) the gov't. still has not publicly named the thief, and, 2) the government publicly made a statement in just the last few days that the capital punishment laws for corruption here are not really enforced. The cast has already been set.

That sums it all up. Be it theft of property or theft of life. So long as you're not poor, theft is no big deal. However, if you embarrass a country full of corrupt thieves or ruin their stellar reputation, well then you have a teeny problem. As if the world doesn't already know what scamming, lying, useless, abusive, sh*t stains they really are.

OK if that is the case I will pop down the bank of Thailand and help myself all the notes Second thoughts not a lot left there is the?, could do it on a bike back in the civilised world steeling an apple off a tree in someone's garden is theft But in Thai nicking 3 paintings is sort of ok even if its in another country and of course who remembers Saudi and the blue thing, Thats how Hitler started in massing his art gallery was it not Every time I see a pic of the Chosen One (and we are not talking football here) I think he is looking more like the evil one every day If you do not own it and you end up with it YOU ARE A Thief But not in Thai

berybert
Was it 2 years ago 2 old people got years in jail for picking some mushrooms from the forest ? a theft that did no damage to the countries reputation in anyway, Now some old rancid dog steals pictures in a foreign country and does all sorts of damage to the reputation of Thailand yet will get away scott free. And if anyone thinks he might be feeling a bit ashamed of himself, they really have no idea
