thai3
Health cares costs seem to have shot up in Thailand and charging foreigners more than locals is a common practice. Then you have the uncommunicative Drs who seems to object to questions and who may have limited training. You have to be very careful selecting one, if no experience abroad I would be reluctant at any price.

chiang mai
The OP's quote of 500 quid seems massively low and very very unlikely. Here's the cost of cataract surgery in the UK: Group Highest Average HCA Healthcare UK £2,973 The Lister Hospital Princess Grace Hospital £2,973 Nuffield Health £3,775 Nuffield Health Plymouth Hospital £2,535 Ramsay Health Care UK £2,627 Oaks Hospital - Ramsay Health Care UK £2,380 Spire Healthcare £4,100 Spire Tunbridge Wells Hospital £2,695 Slightly more expensive than Thailand, plus travel and hotel costs of course. https://www.google.co.th/search?q=cost+of+cataract+surgery+UK&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b&gws_rd=cr&ei=VIaWWIX1GsbYvgTp8KjYAg
steve187
I hope for £500 they were not going to do both at the same time. but as other posts i find that figure to be cheap, I had a cataract operation at a NHS in Grantham Lincolnshire, excellent service, a few years earlier i had a retina detached operation at the EENT hospital in Bangkok again excellent service, - http://www.eent.co.th/home.html this page shows the lowest cost as £1.850 that's one eye both eyes should never be done at the same time - http://www.privatehealth.co.uk/conditions-and-treatments/cataract-surgery/costs/ Edited February 5, 2017 by steve187

slapout
I had both eyes done (2 weeks apart) in CM total cost /79, 000 baht. The doctor I chose after being examined by 3 others who seemed to think they were doing you a favor allowing you in to see them is considered one of the best and he convienced me he is. I put it off so long my sight was where I was a danger behind the wheel

I got a quote from Sirikit Hospital the odd year ago: 30k Thai, 60k farang, one eye. Go figure. There seems to have been a "promotion" by the government some time ago, but that was time-limited and only for khun Thai. Had both eyes done at SupamitrSena hospital (20km from Ayutthaya), 25k each with a night's stay and pre/post checks all included. Excellent service and highly professional, as it's the hospitals specialisation

humqdpf
Wherever you go, make sure that the hospital has the latest in technology as this is what decides the best outcomes in such surgery nowadays. Although I have had surgery done in Thailand, I would also caution that Thailand is still behind when it comes to certain new developments - for instance, I cannot get my biologic drug in Thailand even though it is available in UK, USA etc because the authorities have not gotten around to certifying it after years. Maejo Man
I was quoted 40,000 baht by Chiangmai RAM a couple of years ago. I have since had one done in Australia with a cost of A$4,000 by probably the best cataract clinic in Australia. In at 09.30 and out at 11.30. I could have waited for the public sector and got it done for free, but I was loosing my vision. Brilliant result and everything as clear as a bell

nickcar
I am looking for a hospital to,do my cataracts. I normally use rutnin hospital in bkk to look after my eyes but they are very expensive, 150,000 both eyes and my doctor said not to worry doing it elsewhere as it is a very routine operation. Any recomendations or warnings would be much appreciated. Thanks nick
phantomfiddler
For me there is only one place, Rutnin Eye Hospital on Soi Asoke in Bangkok. I had both eyes done there, about a month apart, around $800 per eye, performed by an american trained and qualified surgeon who was sharp as a whip. I find the original post highly unlikely, and possibly for Lasik and not an intra-occular- lens-transplant. The results in my case were immediate (ie next morning) and far exceeded my wildest expectations, being better than 20/20. I tend to research the hell out of anything like this before diving into the operating room, and the 2 top hospitals both said that if one is more concerned with perfect clarity and sharpness of vision then the fixed focal length lens is the way to go, and 10 years later I heartily agree. They both said that the variable focus lens, though more convenient for some, gave a bit of a compromise regarding visual accuity.

Can you give me the name of the American trained surgeon that performed your operation? I am like you in the sense that I do extensive research also. You only have one set of eyes! I went to the website of Rutnin Eye Hospital and there are many surgeons. How did you happen to chose this particular doctor?
1FinickyOne
This is going to sound crazy but my FIL had me drive him to a lady who worked out of her home. She put a pin in his ear and then a slight cut with a razor blade above his ear. We had to go back and repeat the procedure six weeks later and his cataracts went away. The total cost was about a thousand baht for both eyes. I was totally stunned but it worked.
chiang mai
I wonder if the almost 25 million Thai people needing cataract operations search out American trained surgeons or whether they just go to a good, well trained Thai Ophthalmic surgeon at a reputable Thai hospital! jimlek
I've had surgery in Thailand and could not fault anything from beginning to end,and follow up visits. All Doctors at this public hospital that I dealt with, listened and had no problem answering questions. Superior to my own country of NZ.
