Electricity Fluctuations On Samui

Featured Replies

Does anyone anywhere, but in particular on the ring road between Bangkok Samui Hospital and Tesco have the same problem we have everyday.

The voltage to our building keeps dropping to the extent that the fluorescent lights flicker, dim significantly and sometimes go out. Our UPS’s are constantly beeping for the same reason. Our Air Conditioning slows and almost stops. This is constant throughout the day.

Talking with the PEA they say we have a problem in our building – these fluctuations are nothing to do with them. All our wiring is new and we have had our electrician check it on numerous occasions and internally everything is fine.

If other people in this area are having similar problems maybe we can make them accept that the problem is theirs. Please let me know.

I noticed this in Springer Pub today.

Don't listen to the PEA. they're full of it. They have a habit here where once they install a transformer off the main line that can maybe supply say 150/200 houses they just keep on adding more and more houses to it until no one can get enough voltage.

another thing they do. or don't do is balance the phases. We have three phase power coming to our place 1phase has only 160/170volts 1 has 180/200 and 1has around 200 Sometimes.

Also if anybody is welding in your area it will make it even worse.

the ONLY way out is to get a Transformer, either a 'private' one installed in your premises from SOPOT-ELECTRICAL (Boss speaks english!) or an official one, which can cost quite a bit of money and will never be yours, from the Thai Electricity Authority.

Sorry but this is not a solution...& it will never be allowed by the PEA/MEA. Although they might let you pay to upgrade the existing distribution transformer.

From the voltages somebody posted, the problem could be an overloaded distribution transformer or low "high tension" voltages that supply the transformer.

Besides the electrical authority fixing the fault, the only real alternative is to use a generator.
