The royal title of "Thep" removed was from the 2011 bestowment. Wonder what about the previous bestowments.

My best guess was that removing the most recent deletes any previous titles.

But that's just a guess.

An alternative is that these announcements are gazetted as "Announcement of Prime Minister's Office Concerning the Offering of Monastic Titles", so maybe whomever was PM at the time(s) (1991, 1996 and 2011) are afforded some considerations?

One assumes the current PM made this most recent "request",  "Announcement of the Office of the Prime Minister on Removal of Ecclesiastical Title dated 5 March 2017", but not sure on the 'process', or if this has been done in modern times?

Interesting move by the new king, and hopefully the first of many.

Despite a lot of reservations, maybe he could really shake this country up, and leave a fitting legacy for generations to come.

Get to work on the green shirts next hopefully.

Very, very good move. One of wisdom and intelligence. It may be setting a positive precedent for the new monarch. This super freak monk did not deserve any title. My guess is that he possesses no special consciousness, or spiritual attainment. Just alot of cash, and alot of deluded followers.

I agree Spider Mike 007 and my Thai wife prays for the health of her Royal Highness the Queen of England.

All the establishment needs to do now is get crowds on the streets with whistles calling for the complete eradication of the sect, then the process will be complete. Perhaps Suthep is already on the case.

Not exactly. This is the domain of Buddha Isara.

Suthep handles the political "reforms", Isara the religious "reforms".

Forest department to probe land bought by Buddha Issara

THE ROYAL Forest Department (RFD) has said it does not have details of the forestland allegedly purchased by Buddha Issara, but insisted that if it is found to be encroaching on forest preserves, it would have to be returned.

At the Forest Resource Management Office 1 (Chiang Mai), RFD inspector Somsak Rengpian disclosed yesterday that the department did not have details of the 315-rai of forestland in Tambon Mae Win of Chiang Mai’s Mae Wang district that was bought by the activist monk Buddha Issara. He also said it would take time for the officials to examine the details.

This controversy has caught public interest since news of the monk, who hails from Wat Ao Noi Temple in Nakhon Pathom, occupying forested land in Mae Khan and Mae Wang preserves went viral online.

The King appointed a new Grand Patriarch a few weeks ago...

King anoints new Supreme Patriarch

His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Sunday presided over the ceremony to appoint Somdet Phra Ariyavongsagatayan, the abbot of Ratchabophit Sathitmahasimaram Temple, as the country’s 20th Supreme Patriarch at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

To honour Thailand’s new Buddhism chief, an investiture ceremony started at about 6.30pm with the King presenting saffron robes to senior monks from the Sangha Supreme Council. He then lit candles and incense sticks to worship the Tripitaka, after which senior monks of the Racha Khana rank chanted and granted religious precepts to the King.

The Bureau of Royal Scribes and Royal Decorations then announced the royal command appointing the new Supreme Patriarch.

Interesting that the Sangha Supreme Council is bypassed.

Sangha Supreme Council -- useless lap dogs, if they have any balls they would have kicked his arse way way back.

"Thank you. I'll have a another Martini, shaken, not stirred, and make sure my Aston Martin is out front."

doesn't need an Aston Martin - as he can walk on water and should therefore be able to at least fly or even possibly intergalactic transportation.

see how it's done? No announcement of plans weeks before, no publicized meetings with strategy discussions, no combined task forces leaking all over.

we still don't see it.

An interesting analysis here:

Hope that link is allowed..

That analysis, from Associate Prof. James L Taylor of Adelaide University, is the clearest and most penetrating I've seen yet.

The para beginning: " Second, the idiosyncratic temple has not been known to overtly..." is a bit of an eye-opener.

Dr Taylor's book must be an interesting read.

An interesting read but like all stories of politics, power and religion I do think it's a bit sensational. Joining the dots to sell newspapers is more what this article is about. It makes the whole thing into a UFO conspiracy theory. One that would be better as a plot for the x-files or a evening at the FCC with David Icke.

The author is a bona fide academic and has no reason to sensationalise or distort.

The only other sources on this topic are misinformation and prejudice - which everyone on this thread has fallen for.

Well given your past clear display of your 'colours', I'm not surprised at the gist of your opportune post.

And hey, maybe you beat el to the post.

This is a lot more complex than political colors, more like yellowish-orange good, reddish-orange bad. No clue why people thing this sect is red-shirt aligned? The Maha Nikaya is probably more closely associated with the masses and thus the red-shirts? Maybe the junta's PR machine has been successful?

If you want the opposite perspective, review Stephen B. Young's "article" in the MSM, "US professor recounts uneasy meeting with Dhammakaya heads"; sure he comes across as a junta toady but...

People should probably seek out both a bit of history, starting with the founding of the Dhammayuttika Nikaya, and the associated reforms ca. 1833.

Then look for scholarly articles on the recent history - last 65 years - and then try to understand why the "powers that be" might feel threatened by this sect, and why they feel it must be wiped out. Then read up on the "religious" aspects of the new charter.

There are some aspects which are similar to the English Reformation, Sherman, set the way-back machine for 1532.

Many of these activities portend a potentially dark time for religious freedoms in the Kingdom.

The Chinese government had similar issues with the Dali Lama ca. 1959.

Thanks God - The King has spoken.

It is up to the sitting government now to finish the job. Smoke the place out, get the fellow, deal with him in accordance with prevailing laws and get on with life.

This story makes the law enforcing agencies the laughing stock of Thailand; The King took a clear and very good stance so now there is no reason whatsoever not to close this ridiculous file.

Ohhhh, that is going to throw a spanner into the works.

Not gonna hold my breath.

At the end of the day, the real dirty work still rests in the hands of superstitious boys with very little problem solving skills.

And let's also not forget, this monk has super powers and can not only walk on water, but can make himself invisible.
