A Thai just asked me why do Americans say "Gee Whiz" and no one else does. Any ideas of its origin.?.

Pretty obvious l guess it's just Americanism,  not so much understood if l come out with cockney slang they don't understand that at all.

It's very dated, and Thais learning English should be discouraged from saying it. 

 

It's mostly used now to make fun of the older Americans that speak in such a dated style.

This little term derived in the USA as a euphemistic shorthand for Jesus; in other words it is a minced oath. That original meaning is largely forgotten by those who use it now, who are in any account fewer than before, as it is now sounds rather old-fashioned. The further shortening of simple gee is still widely used in the USA, although neither version was ever common elsewhere.

I have to admit I never made the connection to Jesus. 

To my ears, it's similar to GOLLY! 

Kind of a hayseed type thing. 

The term Geez is from the same beginning also cheese and crackers, and jeepers creepers.

These days, saying Gee is a lot more common than Gee Whiz.
