Hi I am starting to have some problems with cataract in my eyes, not green one though... I had a operation in 2003, and they warned me in Sweden, that I eventually in about 10 years will need to have another one, fixing the last cataract in my eyes...

So I am thinking, either go back home to Sweden and spend money on a flight, sign in again to Sweden with higher tax-rates for another 7 months... OR do it here in Thailand...

I would love to hear from you guys that have been, or if you are in my situation.... Can this be done in Thailand, and do you have a clue of the costs..

Grateful for any kind of information...

Thanks

All went well. Was very happy with the doctor and the treatment,

Check around for a opthamologist in your area that does it. Cataract surgery is commonly done here.

I think what OP is referring to is -  YAG Laser Capsulotomy

Posterior capsule opacity following cataract surgery is now easily treatable at Eye Institute, with a fast and painless procedure called YAG laser capsulotomy.

In a cataract operation, the cloudy lens from your eye (the cataract) is replaced with an artificial lens. In about 10% of cataract surgery patients, the thin membrane behind the lens (called the posterior capsule) can become hazy. This causes blurred vision, much like a cataract, which is why posterior capsule opacity is often called a ‘secondary cataract’.

I was treated in a Bangkok hospital about 6/7 years after cataract operation cost about 10 K baht

i had a cataract op in the UK, brought on at an early ish age, due to a retina detachment operation performed in Bangkok, this was followed by a YAG laser Capsulotomy a short time later, carried out in the UK in an office in hospital and all done in a few moments.

I really have no idea what is the best option for me in my case... But I understand that there is two ways of dealing with this

a - Lens replacement which Ubon Joe gave a link to.. seems to be a good idea and cheaper than option no 2..

b - Laser treatment also a good option...

Thank you guys for your guidence, I save all info you give me..

Glegogo, is this for an eye you already had a cataract operation on, or another eye that has not had an operation yet?

Moved to Health Forum.

This all sounds quite odd,  as once you have removed a cataract, it is gone.  From what you say, you  have already had both lenses removed and replaced with artificial lenses.

What you report being told in Sweden also sounds very odd. There is no expectation of needing surgery again in 10 years after cataract removal.

Are you sure that the surgery you had in Sweden was cataract removal?

The Khon Kaen University Hospital Opthalmology Dept is the  best facility near you, but it might be worth first getting a medical summary of some sort from Sweden that describes the surgery you had done there first.

It is a government hospital and will nto be expensive, even going through their "after hours" clinic.

OK. It now sounds like you did not have cataract surgery at all but rather refractive surgery. If so and if you now have a cataract (as opposed to, say, just worsening near vision due to age) this is a complicated matter. You need to have all the original eye measurements from before your surgery in order for the doctor to choose the correct artificial lens for your eye and the doctor needs to be experienced in doing cataract surgery on people who have had prior refractive surgery, which not many have outside of Bangkok.

I am however unsure if you in fact have cataracts at all. It would be unusual for refractive surgery to have been done on someone within 10 years of needing cataract surgery.

If I am right and what you had was refractive surgery and your vision is now worsening for reasons likely other than cataract, you would do best to come to Bangkok and be seen by doctors specializing in refractive surgery such as at the Thai Refractive Surgery Center. But first get your records from Sweden so that they know what surgery you had.

Thank you Sheryl, I will immy contact the hospital in Sweden and get my "journals" from there. Hopefully they will not make an issue of this. some people are "difficult" you know..

I do really appreciate you efforts Sheryl in helping me out like this, and I am really sorry to be an amateur in the eyes-business. I really do not know more than, I laid there in a comfortable chair in the hospital in Sweden, and the lady-doctor did a big job with LASER in both my eyes. I did have grey starr in swedish language..  (google translate says cataract..) I know because my doctor said that several times.

But as you suggested I will contact them and ask for my journals.

Thanks again, I will report back..

But be aware that 24k per eye price is very low and probably not available in any private Bangkok hospital.  I paid 35k several years ago and that is considered very inexpensive - most single vision lens will run at least 50k and closer to 100k for multi focal types at the major facilities.

But first thing is a good exam to determine what you actually require and as said that should probably be done at a facility with doctors having experience in whatever you had previously so rather important to have more detail.

Yes thank you, I am on it just now, but have to wait for tomorrow and personally call Sweden in order to gain access to my journals....

Thanks guys again.

At Srinagarind (KKU) Hospital, that Sheryl mentioned, the cost was just under 18k per eye within the last year.

I'm very satisfied with the results.

Oh great.... nice to hear. You know for me, I guess for all of us, trust is a big thing when it comes to eyes and inside operations for that matter.

I have now today managed to come in contact with the hospital in Sweden, and they have also today posted my journals from 2004, that year I operated my eyes there. I will, if Sheryl is willing, share info and listen to what she suggests in my case...

I had cataract surgery done last August here. The don't do it with lasers. The dissolve the cataract using ultrasound and put in a lens. The procedure is mentioned here. http://www.allaboutvision.com/conditions/cataract-surgery.htm

It was done at the opthamologist's office. Cost for one eye was 24k baht.

I had the same surgery last year in Sisaket on both eyes. A little bit more expensive because I got special lenses and been in the hospital each eye for 2 nights. It's been done in Sisaket Goverment Hospital. No need for a privat room.Had aircon and all rooms are with2 beds only. Sisaket Hospital is doing laser treatments too but not sure for cartaract
